Im sure 100% of you have had fast food to eat, possibly around 75% if not more consume fast food regulary and perhaps some dont eat anything but fast food. A year ago we had Sick share his struggling to lose weight and get back on track swimming back and forth... If you even care a little about your health, you should go out and buy this book, it will err, change the way you look at the crap you re currently eating.

I know many of you will not have the will to do so but those that do will benefit from reading it.

The name of the book is called "Fast Food Nation, The Dark Side of the All American Meal", written by Eric Schlosser. The book is only 285 pages long and is throroughly enjoyable. I know most here are couch potatoes who couldnt give a **** if they dropped dead tomorrow but those that are a little interested in your health, youll love this book.

Perhaps some of this quotes will persuade to get it...

"God strike me dead before I consume another fast food product...Fast Food Nation is the kind of book that you hope young people read because it demonstrates far better than any social studies class the need of government regulation, the unchecked power of multinational corporations, and the importance of our everyday decisions"

"Overall this disturbing page turner will almost certainly curb your appetite"

"Fast Food Nation...Enough to make a vegetarian out of Arnold Schwarzenegger"

"Sit down for half an hour with Eric Schlossers treatise, Fast Food Nation, and you will experience the best diet plan ever devised"

Not everything in life is gambling, if you care a bit about your own health and are concerned you too may consume too much fast food, I think you should take the time to read this.

If someone does buy the book and somehow manage to read it, Id love to hear feedback.

Slim, I'm a chef and have known this for a while now, sad part is these scumbags are killing people and creating habbit forming bad for you food; it's almost as bad as the tabaco companies.

But, the thing is, poeple have a choice and need to be educated, this book is a great start, "if" people are willing to listen and learn.

The fact is, if we all got off our lazey asses and made our own burgers from good ol ground chuck, or even fried our own home made french fries using oils that are good for us and cut down on sodium, we'd be better off.<-----Just an example) Instead we opt for the easey way out.If we all started picking up recipre books and experimented with meals atleast 2-3 days a week I think it would grow into a great trend.

People don't know what they're missing. Cooking is not rocket science like that fat guy on FoodTV says. Create what you like from the flavors you like and just keep in mind FAT, SODIUM AND CARBOHYDRATES, reduce those and your on your way.

The general rule of thumb is:
For a well rounded meal for 1 person

2-3 oz protein
6-7 vegetable
2-3 Carb- IE pasta, potatoes, rice
2-3 grains IE fiber of some sort

Cut way back on sodium by flavoring your foods with fresh herbs and spices.

Well, that's enugh babble, have probably lost more then a few gamblers on here.

For those who don't care, HAVE A HUGE HEART ATTACK BURGER!

Very good posts. I agree 1000% with you guys. too many people, especially gamblers, neglect their health and diet. People really should stay away from fast food and trans fats. they are killers. when you are stressed out watching a game, eat some pre-cut carrots instead of partially hydrogenated oil filled chips. you will live a lot longer.

SLIM, I am sorry, but as much as I'd love to read your book, I just don't see how I can sit there for 285 pages and read this. I have no patience at all reading, and I only read about 3% of the posts here at Rx, but I did take the time to read yours.. Can you give us a brief explanation what your book says?

Now you mentioned health and losing weight.. This is where i can chime in now. I swear, I kid you not.. On Jan 3rd, 2003, Sick Gambler weighed in at a whopping 252 lbs. I had gone down to 200, 1.5 months ago, and now, for the last 3 weeks, I have been on the Atkins diet, and I have NEVER been this thin in my life. My current weight is 186 lbs.. That's right, 186 lbs and have lost a total of 66 lbs from my peak in January. I just have about 10 more pounds to lose now and i am set. I have been running 2 days a week, playing in a basketball league once a week and playing Hockey once a week. I exercise regularly and am in the best shape of my life.

BUT

That is not why I've been losing so much weight the last 3 weeks.. I have been on Atkins diet and I just say, forget the rest of the diets, this one is UNBELIEVABLE how successful it is. I am just dropping weight like crazy, and I had to buy a new wardrobe now because none of my clothes fit me anymore. I don't have anymore fat on my body, I SWEAR..

Folks, if you want to lose a ton of weight and feel great like I do, be filled with tons of energy, and is great for diabetes, and lowers bloodpressure, go on the Atkins, trust me. I am so full of energy, I have the energy of a 12 yr old now. When I take the stairs, i take em 3 at a time now, not 1 like before. I can keep up with my 5 yr old nephew now and play with him and not be out of breath. You can eat any fast foods you want, just take out the bread..

Here is what you can eat all you want..

You can eat all the meats you want, UNLIMITED. All the green veggies you want.. UNLIMITED.. and many many many more things and you can eat as much as you want, as often as you want. If you're hungry, just eat..

All you have to NEVER eat are these things. DO NOT touch these foods..

Pasta, Rice, Potatoes, Bread, and Sugar.

You can eat everything else. Do this boys for 1 month, I guarantee you will lose 20 lbs and feel healthier and have more energy. If you really wanna shed weight, this is the way.. No other diet works nearly as good as this one. You don't even need to exercise when on this diet.. And it is healthy too. The more fat you eat, the faster you lose, but do NOT touch the carbs. Eat a T Bone steak, or even 2 steaks with all the veggies you want, mushrooms, onions, and all the salad you want with any dressing. Eat till you're full. And if you're hungry in 3 hrs, go eat again.

Try it, then come back and thank me..

Yeah, you can go to McDonalds get a Big Mac
and eat that frozen slab they call meat without
the bread. Do you have the willpower to smell
french frys being made and not order them.

Try going without a bagel or a muffin in the
morning. I admit it. I'm addicted to bread and
potatoes and deserts. Atkins won't work for me,
I just can't give up my Subs and Philly Cheeseteaks.

Jackstraw,

You're right kiddo, that is very true. I was going to also say, if you are a bread lover, FORGET IT. A lot of people I know cannot do this diet because they love bread too much. I can do it because I am not a breadaholic. The only thing I get weak for is what you said, those amazing fries at McDonald's. It's tough, but i replace it with 2 double quarter pounders with cheese and take out the buns. It's still not bad. But NO fries, no bread, no pizza, no bagels, no juice, no fruits, no milk, no sweets and many more amazing things. The only reason why i have an easy time in this diet is because i love meat, I can eat all the time and am never hungry, and I am not crazy about bread.

As a certified health nutritionalist, I strongly advise avoiding the ATKINS diet.

As mentioned above, your #1 priority should be to stay away from TRANS FATS (Hydrogenated oils).

sickness check your PM at mw I messaged you

regarding Atkins diet it is very effective because it makes your body go in a state call ketosis which makes your body use stored fat and muscle(catabolism)as energy instead of carbs you ingest daily.

trans fats as fish described are bad and are the root of cancer and heart disease as proven by german and swiss scientists after studying and drawing parallels to the diets of North Americans and Meditranean people and the instances of cancers and disease over a 6 year period.

congrats sick on your weight loss and being healthy once again

everything in moderation people, its simple

If you have a fast food meal for lunch then for breakfast and Dinner eat LIGHT meals like a salad or bowl of cereal.

If you are eating egg mcmuffin and hashbrowns for breakfast then a bigmac for lunch and then going out to eat pizza for dinner you are asking for a heart attack BUT if you eat a granola bar for breakfast for lunch some chinese food for example and for dinner a bagel or a small salad you are doing NOTHING wrong there.

MODERATION is the key and exercise 3 times a week

Strutt I am in excellent shape, but curious why you are against the ATKINS diet? I have heard good things and some people I know even had it recommended to them by their doctors.

Read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it and it really opens your eyes on what our junk food culture has done to farming practices, the environment and our health. Regardless of how busy you are, 15-20 pages each night is not hard to achieve and the book is well worth it.

2 studies came out this year in support of the Atkins diet with the usual caveats of unknown long term effects blah blah blah. The current diet rage is the South Beach diet and it is fairly similar to Atkins but it has a greater emphasis on fish, healthy oils and good carbs. Two other books (and sites) with some good info is the Paleo Diet by Cordain and Real Age diet by Rozen.

When you look at the food pyramid with it's ludicrous 5-12 servings of grain per day, you wonder who the hell designed it? The Canadian Wheat Marketing Board? I love a good sourdough bread or lasagne (mmmmmmmmmm) but once you stop eating so much of those carbs, you hardly notice it's gone from your diet.

Sick, good job! Next time you're in Bar-B-Barn skip the Spanish rice and fries but go for the whole hawg.

Ok BP, I will go check my PM there in a few minutes.

Logan,

That is the key my friend. When I go to a place like Bar B Barn or any nice restaurant, all I say to the waitress is to replace the rice, the fries or baked potato with some vegetables. It's a simple diet boys, and if you try it, you'll love it. You can eat all the steak you want and veggies too. Just lay off the bread/fries etc.. Imagine having all the ribs, chicken and steak you want. Why even need to eat bread for when you can eat all you want, and still leave the table full.

Boys, take it from Sick Gambler, you wanna lose a ton of weight, go on this diet. I have already lost about 20 lbs in 3 weeks doing this, and a total of 66 lbs. I am now about 185 lbs and the skinniest I have been since 1982..

You wanna shed weight fast, do this diet..

Without giving too much away, let me give you 10 reasons for reading this book....

1. For a 1.29 coke, you get roughly 9 cents worth of coca coly syrup, which costs the fast food industry 4.25 a gallon.

2. Cows that end up as hamburger patties are allowed to eat dead pigs, dead horses, chicken shit, newspapers..etc etc...

3. Stuff left overnight to thaw has been known to be peed and defecated on by rats living in the same "restaurants"

4. These same cows dont eat grass, there isnt any left on the feedlots.

5. The standards of the fast food industry are actually higher than the ones required by the government. Why? Ask the republican party.

6. "There is shit in the meat". Period.

7. Lord only knows what incubation periods for some of the sicknesses in the meat may be. If its 10 or 20 years, well, we might have millions dead when that incubation period is over.

8. 99.9% of all the workers in the meatpacking industry are literally ****ed, they have the worst working conditions and get paid virtually nothing.

9. McDonalds and others have been known to work people for up to 80 hours a week and only pay them for 40 (no wonder they always look pissed)

10. The worst quality meat is regularly sold to........(drum roll) school cafeterias..

Im glad this thread did not just drift to the bottom, this stuff is truly serious, and I know that gamblers tend to be very lazy about stuff, heck shoot me for caring

Hopefully at least one person will read the book and can share their thoughts, come back and get someone else motivated to do the same.

Sick, I know what you mean...reading 285 pages? Me??? No no never... I read it in 4 days LOL at 70 pages a night. Once the last game is over you will want to grab the book and read it. It is very enjoyable, and all the funky little stats that make you go "hmmm" keep you interested.

#1cheater#, Im actually interested in entering the restaurant business someday and more precisely becoming a chef. The world of food fascinates me so this book was a no brainer. I wasnt even looking for a book, LOL, actually I dont think Ive ever gone to a bookstore looking for one but I saw it, read the quotes and it just begged me to take it home.

If I spend 15 bucks on three trips to a fast food restaurant, I might as well spend the 14 bucks the book is worth and actually learn what Im doing to myself in the process.

I think I too will join the "everything but fast food crowd". Getting fed cows that eat other cows cause they have no other choice is not my kind of thing.

I have heard of this and have disputed. Can anyone here make me believe that one can eat 3 lbs of meat 3 times a day with the vegie sides and this is going to show reduction in stomach size? The key in weight reduction is exercise and not filling your stomach up so that it is stretched to max often. Atleast I think so.
