BETDAQ to host debate to address topical issues arising from growth of exchange betting, its potential impact on integrity in sport and on the betting public.

BETDAQ, one of the world’s leading betting exchanges, is to host a broad ranging debate to tackle many of the integrity issues surrounding online betting and sport. The debate will take place at 2.30 on Wednesday 29th October 2003, at One Great George Street in Westminster, London.

Chaired by the BBC Horse racing correspondent Cornelius Lysaght, the panel will include key players and commentators in the industry including Clive Hawkswood from the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Hilary Stewart-Jones, a partner at law firm, Berwin Leighton Paisner , and former head of Legal services at Ladbrokes, and Rob Hartnett of BETDAQ representing the betting industry. Representatives from the major sporting authorities will also be in attendance.

The debate comes as questions continue to be raised over how to curb potential charges of corruption, how to balance the need for integrity with basic consumer rights, how to address the demands on governing bodies to protect their sport, and what the evolution of new betting media might mean in the future.

Rob Hartnett, Public Affairs Director of BETDAQ, comments: “This debate represents a significant opportunity to set the agenda for the future of sport and betting, and to do so in an open forum. Much has been said and written about recent issues concerning horse racing and tennis among others. This gives an opportunity for regulators, betting operators and the betting public to discuss the issues, to create solutions, and to reaffirm the confidence of those who love sport and those who want to bet on it.”@@
