Police say local boxer Paul Spadafora shot his girlfriend, critically wounding her, following an argument outside a McKees Rocks gas station early yesterday.
Police issued a warrant for the arrest of Spadafora, 28, of Moon, on charges of criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and violation of the uniform firearms act, Allegheny County police Sgt. Christopher Kearns said.
At the time Kearns briefed reporters, about 6:30 p.m., Spadafora was still being sought. County and McKees Rocks police interviewed Spadafora in the morning after the shooting, Kearns said, but he was not detained at that time. Kearns said later information, which he declined to divulge, led to the charges against Spadafora.
Kearns declined to identify the victim or many other details, but he said the shooting occurred at 5:54 a.m. outside the BP gas station at 801 Island Ave. The 20-year-old woman was shot once in the chest and was transported to a local trauma center, where her condition left her unable to be interviewed, Kearns said.
In a separate incident early Friday, Pittsburgh police charged Spadafora with open lewdness and public intoxification for allegedly urinating in public. He spent a couple of hours in the county jail.
Spadafora recently gave up his title as the International Boxing Federation lightweight champion to seek a higher weight class.
