Elvis rules Forbes list of top-earning dead celebs
Friday, October 24, 2003 Posted: 3:21 PM EDT (1921 GMT)

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- The King still wears the money crown.

Rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley, dead for more than 26 years, Friday led the Forbes.com list of top-earning deceased celebrities for the third year in a row, to the tune of $40 million for the year ending September 2003.

With perennial megahits like "Don't be Cruel," "Jailhouse Rock," and "All Shook Up," his "30 #1 hits" CD has sold 9 million copies since being released in 2002, and a follow-up CD, "Elvis: 2nd to None," is in the top 10 on Billboard's album chart after coming out two weeks ago.

Runner-up on the list was Peanuts cartoon creator Charles Schulz, earning $32 million. Third at $22 million was writer J.R.R. Tolkien, whose "Lord of the Rings" books have been transformed on screen into a lucrative movie franchise.

Former Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison earned $19 million and $16 million, respectively, putting them fourth and fifth on the list, based on estate earnings.

New to the list this year were Broadway musical composers

Elvis still kicks ass!!!!!

If you add Lennon and Harrison together as they were Beatles, it totals $35 million.
So combined they are #2.

And as history shows it was always Elvis 1st and then the Beatles.

And even in death they are all TOP performers worldwide.

Rock n' Roll baby makes the world go around

The sun never sets on a legend like Elvis Presley. Its just unbelieavble how after 26 years after his passing he is still going stronger than ever. Many current singers could only wish to have half of the success Elvis has just enjoyed in the last 2 years alone. The Beatles may have more albumsales but dont forget when Elvis started out 45's and EP's were the popular form of record production. And if you take all that into consideration nobody is even remotely close to the success of Elvis........and for that matter I dont think anybody ever will.

RDC _ What's even more amazing about Elvis is that most of his HITS that are selling now were from the late 50's.

So it's more like 40+ years since he was hot and he is still out selling the top bands and singers that are alive today that are also touring to promote their albums.

When you think about it that way that some dead country boy from Tennesee is kicking their generation X and Y butts, you just have to smile

Intuition...you are absolutely right! I get a kick out of when I hear that a new singer today is going to be the next Elvis! Most of the performers today are here today and gone tomorrow. Elvis' music is timeless and appeals to every generation across the board. Im in my early 30's and have been a fan since I can remember. But he sang everything from rock and roll to country, R& B and even Gospel. My dad's parents even liked Elvis back in the 50's when he was taboo because they loved the way sang Gospel music.

LONG LIVE THE KING!
