Online gaming may never be the same again. Besides earning high points and getting on to the next level, players can bet for money online.
Two companies YouPlayGames and Ultimate Arena hope online gamers will bet online, besides play games. Both website let players 18 years or older wager money in such popular games like `Return to Castle Wolfenstein,' `Counter-Strike' and `Unreal Tournament.'
The respective company founders claim they their websites are not online gambling sites, as they offer games of skill, not chance.
UltimateArena (UA) was founded last year after the company's founder Dennis Fong, discovered gamers are willing to bet money online, like in a online casino. Before a game starts in UA's website, the players in a match agree upon an entry fee, from $1 to $20. If five players wager $5 apiece, for example, the winner gets $25, minus a 15 percent fee that goes to Ultimate Arena. Players win money each time they successfully kill an enemy and lose cash each time they die. Additional money can be won by ranking high on the company's leader boards. Ultimate Arena is currently legal in every state except Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana and Vermont.
YouPlayGames.com, which is based off the coast of Venezuela Curacao Island, also offers online betting matches. With YouPlayGames, gamers agree to wager a predetermined amount, starting from five cents to any amount. Since, the website, is classified as fee-based online gaming, it is illegal in Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, Tennessee and Vermont. Players in these states can still play online, but cannot wager.@@
