I've had both DSL thru BellSouth and cable modem thru Comcast in Atlanta and they both have worked equally well.
Instead of general question, it's probably more of a specific question you need to ask about your location in Cleveland. If you're on cable modem and it's not working that well for you, it's probably because you're on a shared line with a lot of other people downloading at the same time. If you can find a neighbor that is using a DSL service and he has a good connection, he/you problably close to the DSLAM (DSL access point).

Cable is shared bandwidth, but there is also a LOT more to be shared.
I MUCH prefer cable speed wise-there is NO comparison. In the past, I've had a couple outages with AT&T broadband-now Comcast, but it has been rock solid since I bought a place.
JDJohn, if you can get 1.5mb on whatever the hell DSL you have, I'd stick with it.
I've never heard of 1.5 on a DSL, but I suppose you can get it if you pay out the nose.
If you want to know your bandwidth, check out www.dslreports.com & use the speed test. Close everything else on your computer & run a couple speed tests...if they are close to consistent, you should have a very accurate reading.

Cable is very fast, but if you have Time Warner (Road Runner) then beware ...

All speeds can vary from day to day and even hour to hour. My 1.5Mbps (that's megaBITS, not bytes, per second) on DSL is the max. It probably averages closer to 1.1-1.2Mbps. As stated by others, it depends on how close you are to what they call a "central office". I can vouch for the DSL Reports website - it can also tell you how to tweak your settings for maximum performance which is what I did when I first got hooked-up a couple of years ago.
Of course, eric didn't actually say what his beef is with Comcast. We are just assuming it is speed. I would guess that dependability may be the gripe.

Anyone "in the know" would agree that under optimal conditions, cable is probably twice as fast as DSL. Eric's problem is clearly reliability - out 6 times in the last month. My DSL has maybe been out 6 times in two-plus years. I know others near me who use Comcast that have had similar problems as Eric. Think about it: how many times has your power and/or cable TV gone out during a storm, but the phone still works? I think the phone lines are simply more stable. The speed of cable is tempting, but I'm staying with baby bell DSL until I see a need to switch. But, to each his own...
