why are basketball teasers only 4 pts?

to my mind, 4 pts in hoops is infinitely easier to give up than 6 pts in football - why would anyone take this bet?

even the house admits this when it offers pleasers in football where you can sell 6 pts, but not in basketball where you could sell 4 pts

what is the rationale behind offering only 4 pts?

In simple terms.......a TD is worth 6 points and a basket is worth 2 or 3.

Having said that...........NEVER EVER PLAY A BASKETBALL TEASER. YOU ARE THROWING MONEY IN THE GARBAGE CAN!!!

kenuk, some books have 4.5/5/5.5......There are a couple I believe that even have 5/5.5/6...If your going to tease basketball totals, do it at Pinnacle, they easily have the best bargain there where you receive 6.5/7/7.5....But I still agree with you that what books offer in basketball teaser~points isnt enough.

open yourself up a book and offer 6 point teasers and then come back in here and tell us why everyone else doesn't offer them.

Jay, is there any info out there that you are aware of that coud compare the results, %'s & advantages or disadvantages of teasing basketball? Because actually, I don't think 4~5 points are enough in basketball either.

Although I have no real stats to back this up, it has always seemed to me that results of NBA basketball games tend to fall closer to the pointspread then any other sport.

College basketball is a different story - teasing there would not seem worth it, especially for totals.

strut, I don't really think teasing sides is that bad of an idea, but I definitely do not recommend teasing totals.

Check out the nightly REPORT RESULTS and book basket teasers like I did for 9 years working in Vegas and then tell me basketball teasers are good bets.
You would have to be a supreme wiseguy to win with basketball teasers.

Ok strut, I wasn't doubting you, But I've had pretty good success in the past teasing sides, but definitely not totals. I suppose you can compare it to football teasers, if you tease the right way, you'll be alright.

There is absolutely no value in teasing basketball as opposed to foorball. Just look at the total points of each sport. Say football the average total is 42 pts and you get 6 pts on a teaser that is 14.2%(6/42). Then look at the NBA say the average total 1s 190 pts and you get 4pts on a teaser, that is 2.1%(4/190). Pretty obvious that teasing hoops is a joke.

Why do you gotta act like such a dick. Why don't you offer some factual info instead of just knocking down all the questions. He wasnt asking for a survey on what everyone thinks he was asking the reasoning.

anyways..
If you are going to tease teasing the totals are better value mathematically. Think of it as 2 fighters trading punches. They each average 20 landed punches. If one kicks the others ass he will punch more to make up for the punches he is not receiving. A lopsided contest is less likely to mess up the total output avg.

That said dont tease.

Hache Man- Sorry to sound harsh. Just dont like to see a majority of posters here losing money on basketball teasers. I HAVE NO doubt you may be winning. I would be willing to bet that you would be up more betting those same teasers as parlays....just a hunch.

However, football teasers allow for a much much greater oppurtunity. Not even close. The main reason is that the NFL football numbers are much more sharp.

So Strut, let's backtrack here to your first response to this thread. Do you agree that the basic points given in basketball teasers aren't enough? I have always thought this, and believe they should be almost equal to what is offered on football teasers.

It also depends on what you are paying for the points. If you take 5 points in football on a 2 point spread at a good price it is better vlaue that 6 points on a 170 point heat/piston under.

Im not a teaser but I am wondering if teasing the for 4 points would be the only sesible buy in football? To tack onto all those 5 and 6 numbers? Then you have to factor in that 2 games outcomes are tied together and the win % probability is probably lower for a person normally capping at 55%. uh oh im confusing myself now.

They are enough for the bookies.

Seriously though, I understand what your saying. I personally have never used basketball teasers in my betting arsenal because I am not a supreme wiseguy in this matter. What BillDozer mentioned is a point to consider heavily and that is the price one has to pay on certain teasers. Like in football, 7 point teasers at -130 are not a nearly as viable play as they are at -110, when they become a tremendous play.

I think 1 point in NBA is much more important than in NFL. I do not see the value in NBA teasers though like I do in NFL.

ask yourself why many books offer football pleasers, and ZERO books offer basketball pleasers

I'd say you're right, and the reason is because of the "flow" of the sport

to score in basketball is so easy that final results tend to better approximate the actual abilities of the team, which in turn are reflected in point spreads

in football, teams can easily fail to score what they should simply because of the lack of such a "flow" and the frequency of strange bounces and the like

still, 4 pts is too damn simple for your opponent to score

if you can equate an 8-pt favorite in hoops to an 8-pt favorite in football, I think that often the hoops fave will give up a few garbage pts at the end and win but not cover your teaser, but it's not nearly as easy for the football fave to win by only 1 and not cover your teaser
