Shoemaker was one of the greatest Jockeys to ever ride into victory.

This guys is a classic that we will probably never see the likes of again.

He held the record for 8,833 victories that wasn't broken until years AFTER he rode into retirement. And who knows? Maybe if he wasn't crippled in that car accident he may have come out of retirement a few times to show the new kids HOW it was done.

Shoemaker did some classy things. What about the time he was at some formal dinner and partied until 4am and then went to the track with his buddies and was warming up his horse and riding him around the track wearing a full Tuxedo. What a site! He then went on and rode that same horse to win that afternoon. What a feeling that must of been for him.

I made a lot of money betting on the ol' Shoe as so did others. But it was the Shoe and the class he had that made these races more exciting when ever he was riding in them. And he never used his whip.

God was kind to the Shoe and let him pass away in his sleep while he was probably dreaming of riding again past the finish line........Shoe wins it by 7 lengths into the gates of heaven...

RIP Mr. Shoemaker

I was at Del Mar for Shoes "Last Ride." He was aboard a pony called "Patchy Groundfog."

Good post, sad to see a legend pass away.

Shoe used the whip. Not often, but he did use it. Some horses have to be whipped to respond. What Shoe didn't do was beat the heck out of the horse with his whip. Shoe's move when he used the whip was to tap the horse a couple of times with it so that the horse would know that it was crunch time, then chirp and cluck to the horse to encourage it to run.

The Shoe was to horse racing what The Babe was to Baseball.

Both men passed in each sport, but no less Greats!

The Old Ballgame - You are correct. He didn't use it as a whip. He would just nudge the horse, get on it's level and that was his secret that lead to all those wins.

One of the few jockeys that could really bond with the animal. And that was probably why he was also a great trainer even though he was confined to a wheel chair.

Dead ...

I said "I" was at Del Mar. The tickets sold for shoes last race were collectors items.

I KNOW THAT YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO LAUGH AT ME, BUT IN MY OPINION, ONE OF THE GREATEST JOCKEY'S OF ALL TIME IS COREY NAKATANI. i KNOW THAT EVERYONE HATES HIM, AND HE ISN'T POLITICALLY CORRECT WITH REGARDS TO KISSING THE TRAINERS' AND OWNERS' ASSES, BUT ANY HORSE PLAYER WHO REALLY KNOWS THE GAME SHOULD AGREE THAT NAK IS A PHENOM. JERRY BAILEY, GARY STEVENS, MCCARRON, MIKE SMITH, AND MANY OTHERS WILL BE MENTIONED WAY AHEAD OF COREY, BUT DESPITE HIS BAD ATTITUDE, THAT MIDGET CAN RIDE!

once shoe got in his accident and sued others trying to push the blame off on them - i lost all respect for him. he may have been one of the greatest on the track - but off it - he was a disgrace for pulling what he did in an accident that was HIS fault!

fyi - intuition - the woman in your avatar is sydney moon. i am MASSIVELY in love with her. i met her about 1 year ago - and she is STUNNING in person! she is MUCH better looking in person. i'd marry her ASAP!

she's not THAT desperate for a guy! shrink only wishes it was an ex. maybe when his right hand was busy he was dreaming of her - that is the only way she would ever be a part of his life
