Report: Zimmer upset with Steinbrenner, says he won't be back

NEW YORK -- New York Yankees bench coach Don Zimmer is angry at the way he's been treated by the team, and said he will not be back next season.

Following the Yankees' 6-5, 11-inning win over Boston in Game 7 of the AL championship series Thursday night, Zimmer lashed out at owner George Steinbrenner, with whom Zimmer has had a strained relationship.

Zimmer said Steinbrenner doesn't have to worry about firing him.

"He don't have to worry about that cause I won't be back," Zimmer told the New York Daily News. "I'm a human being and I ain't been treated like one in 11 months!"

When told of Zimmer's comments, New York manager Joe Torre said he would discuss the matter with his bench coach.

"I'll talk to him in the morning," Torre said calmly. "I know Zim's been upset for a long time. It's been a tough year for him. It's been a tough year for all of us."

In Game 3 of the series Saturday, the 72-year-old Zimmer was involved in a melee that saw him get tossed to the ground by Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez, who grabbed the coach by the head. Zimmer left the ballpark on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital with what the Yankees said was a strained left groin.

Zimmer tearfully apologized the next day for his actions and was fined $5,000 by major league baseball.

This is good. Should be able to run into him at Tampa Bay Downs next spring. As for his timing, well......not the best.

Lander,

Hey STUPID, how dare you talk about a senior citizen like that !!!! lol

On a serious note, now that your blind rage is wearing off, maybe, just maybe you can accept the fact that not everyone saw Zimmer as the victim like you did?>

Dick,
A world class athlete like Pedro could have easily side stepped and avoided a 72 year-old fat man. Nothing "blind" about this - it's common sense stupid.

I never said Zimmer was right, of course he wasn't ... but that doesn't mean Pedro was justified.

I think we've seen and heard enough of Zimmer for awhile. He should know better and have more restraint than to air his job complaints before the season is completely over.

Some of the Yanks like ole Zim quite a bit and may be distracted by this BS.

I read that Steinbrenner cut out the company cars that the coaches had last Spring and that Zim is still pissed. Hey, what the heck, if you don't have a company car you're not being treated like a human being. Right?
