Following the Yankees' 6-5, 11-inning win over Boston in Game 7 of the AL championship series Thursday night, Zimmer lashed out at owner George Steinbrenner, with whom Zimmer has had a strained relationship.
Zimmer said Steinbrenner doesn't have to worry about firing him.
"He don't have to worry about that cause I won't be back," Zimmer told the New York Daily News. "I'm a human being and I ain't been treated like one in 11 months!"
When told of Zimmer's comments, New York manager Joe Torre said he would discuss the matter with his bench coach.
"I'll talk to him in the morning," Torre said calmly. "I know Zim's been upset for a long time. It's been a tough year for him. It's been a tough year for all of us."
In Game 3 of the series Saturday, the 72-year-old Zimmer was involved in a melee that saw him get tossed to the ground by Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez, who grabbed the coach by the head. Zimmer left the ballpark on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital with what the Yankees said was a strained left groin.
Zimmer tearfully apologized the next day for his actions and was fined $5,000 by major league baseball.
