The World Rock Paper Scissors (RPS) Society presents the International RPS Championships in Toronto. The society is looking for competitors for this year's event. A total of $2000 in prize money is available and all non-ranked and amateur RPS players are invited to compete.
Rock, paper, scissors is an international game played on schoolyards, pubs, and taverns around the world. Two competitors agree on a set of "primes" (a count to two or three) then in unison display one of three possible throws: Rock (closed fist), Paper (flat hand) or Scissors (top two index fingers extended). Rock beats Scissors, Scissors beats Paper and Paper beats Rock. A tie results in a new game.
Originally, the game was introduced as a way to resolve a dispute. Now, games are played simply for "honour".
For amateurs, a game of RPS seems like a simple exercise of chance. But to the people who play RPS competitively, there are numerous strategies one can employ to gain a competitive advantage. They range from Cloaking (holding back a throw of paper until the last possible milisecond, to try and goad an opponent into throwing a rock -- considered a defensive move) to Priming the Chump (dictating the speed of the prime to distract the opponent from delivering an effective throw).
Gambits, "a series of three successive moves made with strategic intention" range from "The Cresendo" (Paper, Scissors, Rock) to a "scissor sandwhich" (paper, scissors, paper) and are used to mentally psyche out an opponent.
