Yankees marginal favorites as home field advantage although thet were wounded badly today. I'd say without any juice the odds are yankees -105 boston +105.

What the hell is home field worth anyways?

Lets see:

NLCS home teams were 2-5
ALCS home teams are 2-4

NLDS home teams were 5-4
ALDS home teams were 5-4

Not exactly compelling stuff if you ask me, I think in the playoffs home field advantage is worth near nothing. After all if it was so important how do the Cubs get up 5-3, helped by a pitchers' home run, the crowd is going wild, and they go out and get smoked after that. Home field is so overrated in baseball and hockey, its worth something in football and worth a lot in basketball. Don't make the mistake of getting so excited about the Yanks being a home dog, just focus on the matchup and forget who is at home because it hasn't been worth that much anyways and in most years generally hasn't been. People always remember the few series that do go heavily to the home field, but most years it is close to a 50/50 proposition.

In the regular season, I think the Yanks had a better record on the road than at home. Didn't they? I don't think Yankee Stadium is optimal for the Yanks' lineup. They were only marginally above 500 at home I think.

That's why i said Yankees only marginal favs - I don't think home field is worth alot but its worth something. Boston -128 is way wrong wild bill. Would you offer +125 yanks to anyone? i think the takers would be from here ( vancouver) to new york itself.

Don't let your prejudices carry you away yankees will be favs with all books.

Very good point Wild Bill. An old time professional gambler make that same point to me over ten years ago. I proceeded to never bet a home team in baseball, and I still couldn't make a profit. I really don't understand it. You have Clemens at home against an average pitcher and he is 250. He is on the road against the same pitcher, and he is only 160. I only bet the road value, and i still lost. I would love your insight, as i am very perplexed.

Well not a lot of money to be made backing a mediocre pitcher against a solid one, that is why the extra value still may not have made you money.

I made the line -128 because I truly think the Sox have all the edges. I think their lineup is superior from 1 to 9 and I think their pen is in far better form. As much as I respect Roger, Pedro is the better pitcher because even if he doesn't have his best stuff he still can be very tough to beat. I think it was McCarver that said it, has there ever been a pitcher in history that has FOUR "out" pitches? Roger has two. Its hard to say who is the better pitcher or team in a one-game take all situation, but I think the advantages go to Boston. I don't have a particular bias, I am not a fan of either team. I think most people are posting based on their biases, I just state it the way I see it and that is Boston is the better team and as long as they have Pedro pitching they deserve to be at least a decent favorite. I think -128 might be low, but its me respecting the Yankees experience and clutch play, especially Roger's. All that though can't be considered to be more important though than better bats and a better pitcher, live in the moment, not in the all the championships or recent history of the Yanks, I am just paying attention to the teams that will be on the field tomorrow night.

i stand corrected I 've just seen the pinnacle line that have boston at -112, yankees +104. be surprised if all books have it this way though. Good call though.

Roger is the better pitcher, but I think Redsox will win, Pedro went up a notch when he hit Garcia in the head and pointed at Posada and would hit his head, that is what wins championships on the road. Roger proved last game he was the better pitcher and in fact the best pitcher of all time, this was even confirmed by Dr. Mike MArshall. Pedro must be very carefull with Matsui however because that boy can mash, however this game was won back in July when Jeter got beaned in the hand.

WildBill said: "I think in the playoffs home field advantage is worth near nothing."

Why do you think that is? Do you think there is a bigger advantage to being at home in the regular season than the playoffs? Obviously it isn't statistically significant to just look at the home/away results in the playoffs so far this season.

In my opinion, the home field advantage in baseball is primarily extra innings. The other stuff -- crowd noise, knowing the ins and outs of the stadium/wind/turf, sleeping at home, not having to travel, etc are minor compared to always batting last.

Btw the rs/yanks. Anybody remember Joquin Andujar for the cards. Very much like pedro; got in controversy, and while favored; pitched like dog $%#& and the cards got bombed. Pedro will do the same thing tomorrow, take it to the bank. Home dog, what a sweet play.

On a neutral field this game should be about even. Add about 15 for homefield nevermind this
year's records.
