There used to be a tradition that the Captain always stayed with the ship even if it went down. I guess maybe this Captain felt responsible for the loss of life.

Sad to hear and to think some are overly concerned about a man trying to catch a foul baseball.

Go by there every day. I couldn't get back from Brooklyn today over the Verrizano. Had to drive through Manhatten.

The captain is still alive. Never left.

I spent 6 years of my life in the NAVY and there is no EXCUSE for this. We are used to reading these things of third world countries. Ooops we do behave like a third world country.

The ship's captain fled and was tracked down by police at his Staten Island home, said a high-ranking police source, speaking on condition of anonymity. The ferry's crew will be interviewed and tested for drugs and alcohol, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

"Reports circulated after the accident that the captain had committed suicide, but New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters the captain was alive and talking with investigators."
