80 PEOPLE INVESTIGATED IN ITALIAN ONLINE GAMBLING
(AGI) - Catania, Oct. 6 - Operation "Black Jack" has involved all of Italy in its uncovering of illegal gambling on the internet. The numbers have already broken a record: 109 sites have been identified, with 80 people under investigation for participation and 83 others in the process of identification in 45 provinces and 17 regions of Italy. In the operation, 150 tax police reparts with 500 officers have been called to participate. In addition, 11 computers were sequestered. The investigation was held in the Catania tax police headquarters, with the help of the Technological Anti-Crime group with offices in Rome. In a one year investigation, police were able to map out the online gambling ring by following pop-up ads, banners, and links they encountered while navigating sites of online casinos. During the investigation, it became clear that many creators of sites that hosted the illegal gambling ad spaces were paid percentages of the money gamblers lost. The tax police, after locating the mechanism, worked throughout the country on the intranet to simultaneously sequester sites and houses - 15 in all - in 45 provinces of Italy.
