I think this "leak" in bush's cabinet that leaked info about the iraq war will further PUSH the kyl bill out in the distance. Let us hope so

Dante - Good point.......the more scandals we have in D.C. just buys us more time..but somehow we need to get this industry organized to fight back...as if we don't there is NOONE fighting for the U.S. citizen that embraces online sports gambling as their form of entertainment.

It's fairly obvious that neither the House or Senate has the stomach to pass this bill. Some Senators and Reps will rant and rave about this bill because it plays well to conservative constituencies (Ariz. & Kentucky). But when push comes to shove, most members of Congress know what goes on on your computer is none of their business.

I seriously doubt Kyl is going to forget about his anti-gambling bill. Can't he just attach it to another bill so they can just vote it through?

I have heard that isn't the case Chuck. Its not a spending bill, its not a policy bill that even remotely ties into other things. With the Senate being relatively close in votes and so partisan, people will get pissed if their bill gets messed with by something like this that generally is something that passes along both sides of the floor. And they have about a year to get it passed so its not in rush mode at this time.

I think that Kyl is still in line to be faced with a decision. Either pass a "statement" which is a de-fanged bill with lots of carve outs or use a lot of political capital getting this passed. Since he is on the Armed Services Cmte its not likely he wants to use up his bullets on something that at the end of the day won't get him many votes, nor favors elsewhere. With all the military issues coming up he is going to save his favors for those is the guess. I am not saying it won't pass, but people on here are not reading what the bill says now and are not accepting the fact that there are still votes and accompanying changes to be made. The doom and gloom is misplaced, even as it stands now the bill will do little other than make a statement because its almost certain that banks won't be part of the process of denying these charges.

There's always next year, like in 75, 90-93, 99 &

I thought so too, but I was told it would not die although it might have to go some more steps. I am not getting straight answers on this one, but technically since Congress isn't up for elections this year then I don't see why it would need to start over. I think that poster Nomad said it has a year to go as well.

I am going to meet a close aide of our Senator Harry Reid tomorrow, I will get clarification then.

No it will not die. It will die at the end of the 108th congress (Dec 04). Each Congress is two years long, with a "first session" and "second session" When we "recess" in Nov or Dec it is a simple recess, everything will carry over to the second session of the 108th.

When we "adjourn" at the end of the second session, then everything that has not been signed by the President will die.

The longer it takes the more people will be introduced to off-shore gambling. Its too bad Jay Cohen spent hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting a losing case. He had no chance, the deck was stacked against him. The money would have been well spent if it went to lobbyists in D.C. or into advertising.

Dante - I'm thinking that maybe if a Rx MOD appealed to him in a new thread and had several big books interested that the Rx got together he may try to HELP.

nomad wrote: Tell you what, if they'll get on this forum and contact me, as an industry, and demonstrate some sincere interest in this matter, I'll recommend some independent lobbyists who could be very helpful to them.

Dante..the ball is in your court...please see what you and the Rx can put together...let's not blow over this as it may be the OPPORTUNITY we have been waiting for. Please try.

Even(especially) its sponsors don't want it to pass. If it passes, they can't parade it out their with their camoflage about being pro-Family, etc. every time they want some free press to the fools that elect them. Meanwhile, they are(Kyl,et al) selling the American Family down the river with their real agenda.
If the Kyl Bill passed and was signed by W., it would be shown to be the piece of s... it is and it would boomerang on its supporters. Better for them to be 'pro-family' in theory because they are anti-family in fact.

I think we should also focus on a contingency plan should the bill be passed into law. What will we all do if it is passed? Will we who live in the US be able to continue playing offshore without the worry of having our funds confiscated somehow by the American Government? Will the sportsbooks such as Olympic and Pinnacle honor the decision by the US declaring offshore gambling illegal by locking out US players for their own safety? And if not, will our only alternative be the use of services provided by companies such as Fedex?

Or will it simply result in the demise of the offshore gambling industry?

The UK and Australia seem to be very interested in offering sports betting to foreigners and have stated their position is that where the server of the book is decides the location of the bet.

The reason why boards like this and the industry don't get behind the effort is very simple, yet overlooked. These books survive because of the situation that exists. If it was regulated or legalized, these books would all lose bigtime because regulators will give the business to state lotteries in all likelihood. The books that exist today will still have some demand, but only from the sharper players that won't touch the crappy parlay system the states would almost certainly start up. The people that will play with the states will be squares, the people the offshore business needs to survive. If someone that owns or works with a book ever hopes to get involved in a regulated business, they better hide what they are doing now because most regulators won't let them near a regulated operation in the future because what they are doing right now won't go over well. So the only thing books that operate today can do is hope this limbo continues indefinitely and figure that what laws that the Congress can pass will be watered down ideas that won't stop anyone from doing what they have been for years. And since these books pay the bills for sites like this you can see why they is no reason for them to go to bat against it.
