The National assembly's portfolio committee on trade and industry is struggling to finalize its presentation of the National Gambling Bill so that it would be ready for consideration by the full legislature by this Friday, September 26. The committee is known to side with Trade and Industry Minister Alec Erwin, who has said that South Africa should regulate – and not ban – the gambling industry, as it is already 'up and running'.

However, some members of the legislature are unhappy about the effects of 'this monster', especially on poor families. These opponents to gambling and the bill 'would not be averse to draconian controls,' the Business Report claims.

The committee, in response to gambling critics, has amended the bill to advise limiting the roll-out of payout machines and the amount of advertising casinos would be allowed to do.
