Players Mourn Loss of Mohegan Sun Poker Room
Wednesday, September 3 2003

To the great dismay of its regular card players, Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut has closed its poker room. Casino executives hope to double the amount of gaming profits in the same space from $6 million to $12 million annually by removing the tables to make room for 275 additional slot machines. Poker room regulars, who have often had to wait for a table at Mohegan Sun, could not believe casino executives' statements that there are not enough players in the local market to support card rooms at both Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods in Ledyard. “The tribe, we feel, is being disloyal to their patrons of seven years,” says Arlene Olderman, who has been playing at Mohegan Sun since it opened in 1996. “I understand the bottom line is making money; however, one of their values is to be customer-friendly. This doesn't seem customer friendly.” Foxwoods, which has benefited this year from the publicity generated by its participation in the television broadcasts of the World Poker Finals, is expected to swallow most of Mohegan's poker business. Kathy Raymond, director of poker at Foxwoods, is doing her best to accommodate displaced players into her card room: “Our objective is to make the room as successful as possible.”

What they may be failing to realize is how many people these poker players drag with them who in turn play slots. Just a thought.

Casino pencil pushers again making decisions they just don't think through.

The Taj Mahal in AC has one of the largest poker rooms in the world and if they closed it and put in it's place slots they would lose major money. Why? Because 99% of the people that play poker either gamble on other things like tables or slots or they bring their wives and while they play poker the wife is dropping money in the slots.

People who play poker do not plan on playing craps or blackjack, but if they steam after a reverse grind of losing $500 playing 5/10 they realize there is no other way to get it back but take a shot on the crap table. We all know the end result of that genius move.

Krack- You, me and a few others from this forum should be operating a casino, either on the mainland or offshore.

Was up there this last January and played a little at the Mohegan Sun. Though the limits were very modest the room was busy. Am very surprised they shut it down.

In Biloxi when the Beau Ravage opened they had a very popular card room yet almost immediately shut it down for slots too. To these people it is down to how much they earn per suqare foot. They don't really care to know much more than that.

No, sorry... the majority of hardcore poker players do not play ANYTHING else except for poker. The overlap is minimal.

Square foot for square foot, the space is better utilized with games that produce a higher return. Read: Slots.

The odd thing is that space ISN'T at a premium. The tribe has plenty of land. They could just as easily build more floor space.

It's a business guys. the reason these folks are so profitable is because they know what they're doing.

not only is the overlap minimal, very few poker players are married, so the wifey playing slots is a non issue. If these indians were really smart they would get rid of smoking too, I would like to see these indians shut down, overall they are bad for america.
