I made my first ever bet with a local bookie last week......

Made my first bets ever with a local last weekend. Won one, and lost one, straight up bet. I hit a 5team~6point teaser, and it paid a whopping 3-1!!

Is this normal for most locals?! Most books pay 4.5 & 5-1 on these.

Hatchy betting with locals is dangerous because you do not need money up front. Last week I had 10 dimes in action with only 4 dimes to my name. I do like though that I do not use my own money especially when betting a lot of games, heck I let the locals put the front money up. The key is though to make sure you have 2 good sharks that are understanding and not leg breakers. I use sharks a lot and if I am short I just have to run errands for them to pay remaining balance like cutting grass and cleaning garages out, ect...

Hatchy make sure your careful though and bet with your head and not over it.

Some are still good, we have one here in NJ that takes 20 dimes max on baseball and no one beats him but he does copy Pinny's lines all the time.

locals will always shortchange you on odds. There was a thread on this a couple of months ago. The only advantage to locals is that they sometimes use stale lines that you can hammer.

docdekay, there are still many locals that know more about this business than 95% of those guys on the islands. And, let's not forget who is running alot of the stuff down there: locals who went offshore. Don't throw us old locals to the wolves yet.

My local used to give me 3-1 odds on a 2 team parlay. I haven't used one in a few years though since Offshore came around. I love being able to bet 24/7 and at my conveniece, not theirs.
