Info retrieved from www.sportsbookreview.com:

Books under attack by extortionist hackers as of 5 AM Sunday: Rio, Skybook, Hollywood, BC Bets, Grande

Books that have recently (past week) upgraded to become hack proof: WWTS, VIP, Pinnacle

An extortionist hacker group continues to attack books - SBR has confirmed several books have paid the ransom - Sketchy info has a group of books through private investigators hot on the trail of the hackers - Another CR group of books hastily organizing a reward bounty on hacker group.
________________________________________________

1. How do we know that this group or other groups will not continue to commit the same crime to those who have acquiesced?

2. How do we know that a book can in fact become hack-proof?

3. Do we now avoid those books that are not of considerable financial strength?

4. Who is more of a threat to the industry now, US politicians or hackers?

I just think that these are some of the questions that are currently on the minds of readers.

Multiple outs are a must. Can they possible hack all the books at the same time?

Yes,Jay,these were DOS attacks rather than hacking, but I would think that multiple outs are the answer, and that the deniers can not hit everything at once.

FYI: Grande and BC Bets are not under attack, nor have they been up to now. However, they have received the email threats. The systems were taken down over the last two nights for protective measures.

I may not be able to hit all of them but a few of them yes. I wouldn't challenge them. I am sure they are reading the forums.

Do the hackers/extortionists ever go after British and Australian based books? If not, is there a reason they only go after the books in the Caribbean and CR?

jam,

No one is immune to a DDos attack but I think the Caribbean books may be easier targets because they may not have the infrastructure in place to withstand the attacks. I mean the British/Aussie books may have more money invested in network security because the country's governments regulate the industry (and I would assume they would have an interest in protecting their own stuff).

That's not to say the books down in Costa Rica and the Caribbean islands don't have the capabilities to combat these attacks but I think the infrastructure (network design and configuration) when compared to British or Aussie books would be more "in danger" of being affected by attacks like this.

But NO ONE IS IMMUNE from a DDos attack. If DDos can take down CERT (THE National Computer Security people in the US) it can take down anyone. It's a question of tracing the attacks(which are usually spoofed and orchestrated from various infected or compromised hosts to begin with) and shutting down the source of the attack. I've dealt with these attacks in the past and there is never a quick way to stop them (other than shutting off your PC).

This won't hurt the industry, but the Patriot act will.

How will you send $$$ to or from books at this time next year?

1. Patriot Attack

2. DDOS Attack

3. NFL Favorites Attack

Not the best start for the books.

The "is the industry doomed" industry is a bigger than the gambling industry.

We could take a bets on whether gambling was doomed, but if it was doomed, then who'd be around to pay/collect?

Gambling is here to stay

Offshore gambling is here until regulation takes over and then who knows how it will play, but the gambling industry as a whole is going no where.
