Here are my 4 candidates:

1. Mark Prior - Cubs
16-6 / 2.47 / 221/46 SO/BB / 197 IP

2. Jason Schmidt - Giants
16-5 / 2.33 / 206/45 SO/BB / 200.2 IP

3. Russ Ortiz - Braves
19-7 / 4.08 / 139/97 SO/BB / 198.1

4. Eric Gagne - Dodgers
51/51 saves / 1.30 / 129/18 SO/BB / 76 IP

With 2 weeks left the story is yet to be written I think, still too early, but I think it's between Gagne and Prior with an edge to Gagne at this point. But if Prior were to throw CGSO's or something close leading the Cubs to the playoffs then I'd give him the edge.

I agree Gagne is having aq tremedous, record breaking, season. But how often does a closer with the Cy Young? This year we have at least 2 very viable candidates. Piror and Schmidt both have ERA's under 2.50. Schmidt 2.33. Thats amazing. In this day and age. Plus they have great K/BB ratios and are both on contending teams.

I can't see them giving it to Gagne over these 2 options.

Gagne is good, but Dodgers aren't going to make the playoffs, Prior is the best pitcher in the NL hands down. All I remember about Gagne is Hank Blalock taking him deep in the All Star Game

There's no doubt that Prior is fantastic, but Gagne is more deserving IMO. Not one blown save and an ERA close to half of Prior's and Schmidt's. Throw in a record-setting year and it's a no-brainer to me.

I voted for Gagne, he is simply too dominate. He really has an effect on the game, the mindset of his team and the opposing team, so he should win. I do really like Schmidt, he is nasty, has a great record and fantastic era. If he had won 20, I would have voted for him.

A relief pitcher should never win the Cy Young Award. The Cy Young should go to Prior (if the Cubs make the playoffs) or Schmidt. They should make a new award for the best relief pitcher.

There is an award for the best reliever.

I disagree, a closer should win if no starter had a great season. Schmidt and Prior are having dominant seasons.

Schimdt 2.33 era. Thats like maddux in his prime!
Prior 2.47 era. Is right up there too.

If either of those guys wasw 16-5 with a 2.75, I would agree with you. But with an era under .250?? You can't give it to the closer.

I would say PRIOR over Schmidt..for the simple fact that SF has been in first wire to wire...sure he helped his team...but it was never in jeopardy. The Cubs however found themselves trailing and Prior came off the DL after All-Star break and has been completely DOMINANT...and has charged this team right back into possibly grabbing a spot..now that in my eyes is more impressive..putting up those numbers in the clutch...not while your team is coasting.

After saying all that Gagne has to have HUGE consideration. If Cubs make playoffs..i might give Prior the nod..as long as he performs well in his last couple of starts. If the don't its Gagne hands down.

Prior , without him the Cubs would be out of it...If the Cubs don`t win the central, I may reconsider....

Gagne has insane numbers! The dude is sick! 6.5/1 K to BB ratio!!! thats nuts! Of course the only time all year he gets beat I lose money...All Star game...I hope the Cubbies do get in...Cubs/Giants NL showdown would be wild!

Prior should win it, Gagne pitches 1 inning at best, let Prior pitch 1 inning and his #'s would be insane.

51 0f 51 sure impresses me enough, hell look what has happened to the Braves since Smoltz was hurt. It makes it an 8 inning game when you have a Smoltz or Gagne, my vote is for the funny looking fella from LA!
