Joe-

Nice info. Hollywood claimed in a post that one book that paid the $30K was re-attacked for an additional $20K. Hollywood did not identify the book.

Any info on this claim?

Vaulted-

My guess is that they made "short-sighted" business decision that another attack would cost them more than $30K, so paying was the lesser of two evils.

Of course, when the hackers get greedy again or blow the money they've already collected, the ones that pay will be the first they visit.

BTW, notice the extortion letter posted by Hollywood.... it said that paying would protect you for 12 months. This means they intend another round of blackmail next year.

No info here on one of the previously-extorted books being re-attacked ... wouldn't doubt it though. And, I seriously doubt the promise of 12-months immunity for any book that pays ... there are no rules in the extortion game.

Capper,

They're exactly what they sound like. Attacks orchestrated to "deny services". There are a lot of different types of DOS attacks. You can attack the pipe that people use to reach the book's servers on the net OR you can just constantly send requests to the servers to the point where they becomd overloaded with requests and basically shut down. A Distributed DOS attack comes from a source that goes out and takes control of other pc's and instructs them to all attack a PC or PC's or network at the same time or in intervals. Often times the owners of the "zombie" PC's don't even know their computers are being used for these attacks.

It's not easy to combat these attacks. I give the books who haven't paid these scumbags full props!
