Why would you pay the extortion fee?

I'm not necessarily blaming anyone, I am just curious what is the logic behind it? You think they say, "okay he paid let's move on"? You have set a precedent that you negotiate with hackers. Even if these guys keep their word who's to say another group will not be knocking on your door next week? In fact I'll go out on a limb here and say you can almost count it. The worst part is it seems to me by giving in you have zeroed them in on this industry now. Again, please don't take this as I am calling anyone a fool for doing it. I've learned long ago things are always different when your in someone else's shoes. I just can't honestly see what a book hopes to achieve by paying $30,000 on someone's word "we won't do it again until next year".

Thankfully most aren't as hardheaded as me but I'd shut down before I paid this money.

Because I think they hoped it would work. The logic would be, if they didn't pay they'd lose the revenue, as a number of us pointed out last week, which could be far worse, and most of the paying books (according to Ken, and I hope he publishes the names of all the books, a number did pay) probably could not mount a defense quickly enough. Paying the money, they may think, buys them time to get a permanent solution in place, but if they seriously believe that extortionists won't be back whether it's the same ones or not and thought this was a one-time payment, they have to be absolute idiots.

Every book who paid, which I suspect began paying last week, simply doomed their fellow sportsbooks (who they probably don't give a shit about) to these DDoS attacks and extortion attempts - nothing breeds contempt like success.

This has also exposed the root problem with the industry and is EXACTLY why these mostly, if not all, CR and Curacao books got attacked - no true legal regulation. The same lack of regulation that allows books to arbitrarily make their own dispute resolutions, or sometimes simply confiscate player funds without any true appeal possible, has come back and bit them in the ass, hard. The extortionists pretty much figure a number of owners are used to being 'unto themselves', and also figured that they would be easy targets - does anyone REALLY think the FBI is going to give two shits about tracking down and PROSECUTING these people???

This may be why they have not attacked, at least to my knowledge, Australian or British books, since those ARE legally regulated and the full weight of the law would come down on them.

If it was me and I wasn't confident in my Network I would pay without question. Crossing your fingers and hoping the attacks just stop doesn't keep the doors open.

If you are technologically unable to defeat the attack then what choice do you have if you want to continue to operate and let players have faith in the security of your operation?

Lets say you don't pay and these attacks really happen every week for 20 weeks. Would you want to send your money to the book that couldn't figure out a way to patch their hole?

We are dealing with people extremely well arm technological speaking, no scrupulous and if they need the money, they probably will attack you again, in a minute.
So the only thing you can do is try to find a well descent ISP and trust every little tech detail to them. There are many things you can do on your network (keep it well updated) but if they want to attack you, they will do it.
So basically, paying is no insurance. So stay away from your bank account and invite you ISP for dinner and cocktails.

Mike forgive me but IF I am a book either new or established I "MAKE SURE 100000%"that im HAPPY and CONFIDENT with my network being able to withstand a hacker attack...I mean that is PRIORITY #1 IMO

No way, I would take that 30K and pool it with every other book's 30K to hire the best Network Security guys available ...

... and then after they tracked it down the rest of the money would go towards hiring the baddest bounty hunter on Earth.

Make no mistake about it some of the books are paying the fee. They wouldn't still be attacking if no one was paying them.

You do not give into extortion or blackmail, especially when it may go public. Others will follow behind this group and try to do the same. This is diff than a hack, but I do not think you can stop hackers, you can only make it tough on them, and I, as well, feel that the FBI would do nothing to assist here. Maybe some advice from them, but I doubt any serious help. FBI has the homeland to worry over. I would not expect them to worry over this.
