I would never give a SSN to ANYONE. Absolutely no reason for someone in this business to ever ask for one.

Paypal doesn't require a SSN and they're based in the U.S. If this is true, it sounds like Neteller is asking for information they have no right or reason to have.

Damnit! Been reading for weeks about how to set this up. Finally chose a few OS Books and decided to fund with NETeller; just signed up "yesterday." Have not verified my account, but gave bank info and yes, SS#...Was concerned, but figured it was part of the normal routine...yeah, yeah Square. Would greatly appreciate your help/suggestions with the best way to proceed with setting up a small account? Thanks Everyone...

Where is this info coming from exactly? Who is reporting it and can it be verified? Also, what is the SS# required for exactly? To open a new account, for all accounts, to request a payout, to deposit?

Does anyone have the email to copy and paste?

I know two things for sure about this...

1) Since the Patriot Act new account holders do need to enter a SS#. However it doesn't need to be accurate.

2) Account holders prior to the Patriot Act currently do not have to have a SS# on file unless they modify their account in some way. Change bank accounts, addresses, email addy, request a debit card etc.

This could be an important thread but as usual there is a lot of nothing being said of any use or value...

Hey "MC" Thought I gave the details ...Just set up a NEW account. See link below, as you can see SS# is now required field. They say it must be verified prior to funding. Can you enter a fake?...dunno. I gave my real one not knowing there was ever any other choice...wooops. Hope this helps a little...Cheers! (Mods. figured it was ok to link to NETeller, since it is advertised here...if not, my apologies.)

go to:
https://www.neteller.com/neteller/signup.cfm

click on country field and they have all the countries not just the usa

Next to SSN it says:
"To safeguard our members from potential fraud, NETeller collects information like SSNs which are used for identity verification purposes only. NETeller does not store these numbers once the client's identity has been established and does not share your confidential information with 3rd parties.
View our privacy policy."

so, how the **** do they verify people in other countries since they dont have a SSN????

Cal,

If you read my post carefully you will see that I know you do not need to enter a valid one. Several people I know with newer accounts did not.

What I want to know about was the original post where it says there is an email going around about Neteller stating a valid SS# is required.

So, like I said. The thread is good but the posts are useless. I would like to know if this is accurate info and if so I would like someone to share the email here as I have not gotten one. Speculation and stuff I already know is of no use to me.

There are two seperate Neteller groups and that is my concern. Pre and Post Patriot Act.

last thing I would want to do is to be moving large amounts of money around under a fake social security number. if the govt gets their hands on this info, those are the first people they will go after due to the "terrorism" connection.

I guarantee that the first thing they do if they get them is screen for fakes and fradulent numbers.

Whether they have the desire to go after all offshore gamblers is an entirely different question. probably will be the IRS if anything, looking for winnings.

Not saying they will ever get the numbers, but much safer just to be on the up-and-up with it, IMO

Thought I'd pass this along...Just asked the following via NETeller online help service:

Rhia: Hello! Welcome to NETeller Live Chat. How may we assist you today?
you: Hi Rhia...I had some questions regarding the collection of a social security number.
Rhia: sure
you: Is the SS# maintained on file, or just used to verify idenity, and then disposed of?
Rhia: maintained on file
you: What if I were NOT a resident of the US, I would not have a SS#...yet still allowed to register...correct?
Rhia: yes
Rhia: just have to provide and id
you: What form of id would be required?
Rhia: passport or drivers license
you: OK...One more question
Rhia: sure
you: I have not been verified yet, I was supposed to wait a few days to have money deposited in my bank account...
you: ...then log into NETeller and enter the amount to set up the account.
Rhia: May I have your NETeller account number please?
you: yes,
Rhia: if you choose to close your accout , you have to phone us
you: Will my info. be destroyed or held on file?
Rhia: not sure
you: LOL!
you: I suppose they will tell me when I call.
Rhia: i think it be held on file for a certain time
you: Just concerned about having my SS# floating around.
Rhia: i understand
you: Is this the correct number to call regarding this process (888)258-5859?
Rhia: yes
Rhia: ask for security
Rhia: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
you: No, Thank you Rhia...Most helpful!!

ok first off...

Lets not pretend Neteller is independent of the US gov becasue it is outside of the continent. Those Canadians have been suckin washington balls for yrs. Why do you think they dont have an army?

Anyways...

Neteller is receiving pressure from the Canadian gov not to advertise to the US anymore. They have opened up their services to Canada and I think are looking at the Asian market. They already have stopped servicing some US citezens, most notably the state of Maryland.
The pressure from the canadian gov would logically originate from Uncle Sam. I'm sure it has something to do with the SS#s. I'm using neteller as we speak but I'm banking on the flexcard and the alike.
