When betting a horse to win a race ...they list two choices...for example:

+225
SP

My question is: What does the SP stand for. I am not a horse expert by any stretch of the imagination which is obvious. Probably simple.

THANKS

Strut, I would think that +225 is just a little lower then odds of 5/2 that you would see at a regular track. Don't know what the SP is.

I tried reading their Horse racing rules and it does mention it but after reading it a couple of times I still didn't understand them.

Sorry

SP = the starting price.
The punter has the option of taking the "fixed" odds or betting the tote.

hope this helps....

5 minutes before post, you see your horse at 8-1, you have the right (in the UK) to bet it at that price or bet it at SP which means that whatever price the horse goes off at.

Fixed pricing is great because often you can bet a horse an hour before the race at 4-1 and then watch him get bet down to 7-4 and win for fun and you have a 4-1 winner. Of course, your 4-1 horse could go off 7-1 and you are stuck with 4-1, but if you follow the races closely, you can usually determine which horses will drop in price...

Wish they would do this in the States. They tried once at the defunct Sport of Kings and they got clobbered so that was that.

SP = "I wish to be ****ed on the price."

The starting price is maninuplated by the big off-course books to suit their liabilities in the betting shops. So it's normally right to take a show or an early price.
