NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hollywood celebrity couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have split up, at least temporarily, after postponing their wedding over a media frenzy, People magazine reported on Sunday.

The magazine's Web site, http://people.aol.com, quoted unidentified sources as saying Affleck decided he wanted out of the relationship, but it was not certain if the break-up will be permanent.

Representatives for the pair could not be reached for comment. People magazine reported that the representatives said they had no knowledge of the break-up.

The pair, who reportedly planned to wed on Sunday at an estate in the hills near Santa Barbara, California, said in a joint statement last Wednesday that they had postponed the nuptials because of unwanted publicity.

Lopez, 33, and Affleck, 31, are currently America's hottest celebrity couple, but doubts were cast over their engagement when stories surfaced in tabloids and magazines last month about Affleck visiting a strip club without Lopez in July. Lopez publicly shrugged off Affleck's night out.

The couple also suffered bad publicity when their first movie together, "Gigli," was panned by critics and flopped at the box office in the summer.

Good for Ben. Ben/JLo marriage wouldn't have lasted a year.

IF this is true - way to wake up and get smart before you married this no talent fat ho!

but as i have seen elsewhere - maybe this is just a ploy to throw off the media so they can get married in peace and quiet - maybe even today still.

Sources: Ben in Vegas, Jen in Miami after split
Monday, September 15, 2003 Posted: 10:31 AM EDT (1431 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Hollywood celebrity couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have split, at least temporarily, sources close to Affleck told Reuters on Sunday.

The pair were seen on Friday in the Los Angeles area boarding planes to different U.S. cities, after postponing weekend wedding plans due to a media frenzy, said the sources, who wished to remain anonymous.

The sources said that sometime last week Affleck called close associates telling them that he and Lopez had broken up. On Saturday Affleck was spotted gambling and sunning himself without Lopez at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, they said.

Meanwhile, sources said that Lopez on Friday flew to her Miami residence and had made plans to head to Canada where she is filming a new movie with Richard Gere.

It was not certain if the break-up would be permanent, the sources said.

Representatives for the pair could not immediately be reached for comment. People magazine reported that the representatives said they had no knowledge of the break-up.

The pair, who reportedly planned to wed on Sunday at an estate in the hills near Santa Barbara, California, said in a joint statement last Wednesday that they had postponed the nuptials because of unwanted publicity.

However after making that announcement, the couple were seen together at the trendy Los Angeles restaurant, The Ivy.

One source familiar with the couple said that a request by Lopez for a prenuptial agreement may have chilled wedding plans.

The couple also suffered bad publicity when their first movie together, "Gigli," was panned by critics and flopped at the box office in the summer.

People magazine is owned by AOL Time Warner, the parent company of CNN.

If Ben was really smart, he would never seriously get involved with anyone. The guy can have his pick of the beaver buffet any time he wants.

Bennifer Breakup

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez went their separate ways on what was supposed to be their wedding weekend. Who pulled the plug on the relationship? Where did the couple really spend their weekend apart? Access Hollywood got all the details on the Bennifer breakup.

On what was to be the start of her wedding weekend, Jen boarded a plane Friday afternoon at Burbank airport without Ben and arrived in Miami later that evening.

Meanwhile Ben, who was rumored to be in Vegas, spent Friday night at Larry Flynt's Hustler Casino in Gardena, Calif.

"I said to Ben, 'You know, the guys here would rather play poker with her than you,'" Larry told Access.

Flynt said Ben stayed at his poker club gambling from around 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. "If she'll call me I'll let her know that he didn't get out of line. He was in really a truly great spirit, an upbeat spirit," said Larry.

On Saturday Jen, no longer wearing her engagement ring, spent the day at Miami Beach with some friends. Although she didn't look it, according to sources Jen was devastated at the news that Ben had broken off their wedding and was said to be in disbelief.

Later that afternoon, Jen reportedly left her heavily guarded Miami compound for pampering at the Mandarin Spa. That evening she enjoyed the nightlife at South Beach.

Ben was spotted Sunday having dinner with friends at the popular Mexican chain restaurant Baja Fresh. According to People Magazine, his decision to end his relationship came after a heart to heart with his mother. Ben seemed to be coping well though. He even stopped to sign autographs on his way out before climbing into his Rolls Royce and heading home.

According to sources, Ben called friends mid-week to let them know that he was going to call off their relationship -- something he would have known when he made the very public appearance with Jen at The Ivy the same day they announced their wedding postponement.

Donald Trump saw the footage and wasn't surprised. "I watched them walking out of that restaurant last night and that didn't look like a love fest, so something happened," Trump told Access.

Over the weekend at the Rosa Cha Fashion Show in New York, Cris Judd, the man Jen was married to before she met Ben, said he knows all too well that relationships can be challenging.

"Marriage is tough as it is, so you have to work at it," said Judd.

At the Edge-Mar Center for the Arts Event, Ben's friend Christian Slater, who reportedly was with Ben for an impromptu bachelor party at a Vancouver Strip Club two months ago, summed up perhaps what the rest of us are thinking.

"I'm pretty 'Bennifried' out. I mean, who gives a flying Affleck, that's what I say," said Slater prior to the breakup.

Jen and Ben timeline

How did the couple who were so in love just days ago end so fast? Access took a look at the timeline of how they became Hollywood's royal couple.

They first got to know each other working on "Gigli," which began shooting in December 2001. Then in March 2002, the first sign of affection came as Ben took out a full-page ad filled with lavish praise for Jen as she was honored as ShoWest Female Star of the Year.

"I just thought I'd write a paragraph saying what a professional, what a decent person I think she is," Ben told Access.

Jen was pleasantly surprised by the ad. "He's a poet. It's beautiful. I mean I was just like, 'Wow." We worked together today, so I saw it and I said, 'Thank you so much for that.' He was like, 'I mean it from the bottom of my heart. We've had a really great working experience together and people should know,'" said Jen.

Keep in mind, Jen was still married to Cris Judd at the time. But in what now may turn out to be the only interview ever of Ben and Jen together, the pair assured us there was no hanky panky.

"When did you fall in love?" Access Hollywood's Pat O'Brien asked the couple in July 2003.

"It was like we became friends first, that is the honest to God truth," said Jen.

"Yeah that is the truth," added Ben.

In April 2002, Jen opened her new restaurant Madre's. It was Ben who came up with that name. She arrived at the opening with Cris, but danced with Ben at the party. Just two months later, Jen and Cris announced they were separating.

"You know, it's just two people, it didn't work out," Judd told Access.

Ben and Jen began dating almost immediately. On July 22, 2002 in New York, Jen introduced Ben as her boyfriend. Two days later, Ben gave her a Harry Winston diamond bracelet worth a reported quarter of a million dollars and brought her a birthday cake on the set of "Maid in Manhattan." The next day Jennifer and Cris' divorce papers were filed.

In August 2002, the pair started shooting the upcoming "Jersey Girl." Then, Jen and Ben shot the "Jenny from the Block" music video where Jen's got a "rock" on her finger that's not "fooling" anyone.

It was indeed an engagement ring that she was wearing and in early November, Access broke the news that they were engaged.

The couple's first public event together was the New York premiere of "Maid in Manhattan." However, they were not interviewed together.

Next up, the radiant couple induced hysteria at Ben's "Daredevil" premiere. Then in July, Ben and Jen fever hit a new high with our exclusive interview with the couple. It was the one and only interview of them together.

Later that month, they rolled up to the "Gigli" premiere in a Rolls Royce. Finally, last Wednesday Jen and Ben made a very public appearance at The Ivy on the same day they announced they were postponing their wedding due to "excessive media attention." That outing may very well have been their last public appearance together.

Here's a timely article from Fox ... I agree with the writer ...

Celebrity Worship Turns Actors Into Gods

Sunday , September 14, 2003

By Eric Burns

It is not the worst television show in the world. It only seems that way when you watch it.

It is called Inside the Actors Studio. It airs on the Bravo network and is like no other program I have ever seen in its veneration of celebrity. Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood merely make heroes of entertainers. Inside the Actors Studio turns them into gods. It is the official televised church service of the American secular faith, and to tune into an episode is to long for the sound of chalk scratching a blackboard so that there may be some relief from the liturgy.

The host is a man named James Lipton. I know nothing about him except this: If he had been alive in the Middle Ages, he would have earned his living by licking the boots of the third-rate nobility and then bragging to friends about the sanctity of his tongue.

The live audience is a collection of students who want to grow up to be actors, and who alternately gasp and nod and stare in wide-eyed reverence at the TV or movie star whom Lipton interviews each week, receiving each word that he or she utters as if it were scripture.

But if Inside the Actors Studio is not the worst television show in the world, it was responsible, a few weeks ago, for the most repellant statement that I have ever heard in support of the perverse values of the celebrity culture.

The interviewee was Tom Hanks. As the program wound to a close, and I threw away the nub of yet another piece of chalk, Lipton turned to the camera and uttered the following: “I’d like to say a final word to our 240 masters degree candidates here at the New School University. Tonight, you have been privileged to spend a night with Tom Hanks. (Lipton wags his finger at the students.) In the years ahead... earn this!”

At this point, I put the chalk in my mouth and took a bite.

It is one thing to suck up to a celebrity. It is another to be told that it is a privilege to do the sucking. It is yet another to admonished that one must work hard in the years ahead to be worthy of that privilege.

This is not to criticize Tom Hanks. I think he is a fine actor. From what I read, he is also a kind and civil and perceptive human being. So much so, in fact, that I would like to think he was at least a little embarrassed by Lipton’s fawning, obsequious, tongue-abrading performance.

I would like to think as well that, when Hanks heard Lipton tell the students to “earn this,” he thought, if just fleetingly, just for a moment, that young Americans do not need to earn the right to be in the presence of actors, even superb, Academy Award-winning actors like Hanks. Rather, they need to earn the right to be in the presence of scholars and statesmen and people who have achieved notably in science and medicine and engineering and the management of civic affairs.

They need to earn the right to be in the presence of men and women of character and conviction, of integrity and dedication. They need to earn the right to be in the presence of those who found charities and are in other ways boons to society.

I am certain that Tom Hanks fits into some of these categories. But it doesn’t matter. The people in the audience were not awestruck by him because of the kind of citizen he is. They were awestruck because he was Forest Gump (search). Because he tried to save Private Ryan. Hell, even because he romanced a mermaid all those years ago.

Lipton concludes each episode of Inside the Actors Studio by reciting a questionnaire to his guests and eliciting their answers. I conclude this episode of my column by providing a few answers of my own.

What is your favorite curse word?

Star****er.

What single thing most turns you off?

Misplaced cultural priorities.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?

Inside the Actors Studio has been cancelled.
