The Herald Sun reports that, according to a study just released by the American Gaming Association (AGA), 85% of Americans approve of gambling, whether for themselves or for others. Despite this fact, some organized religions maintain a crusade against Internet and other forms of gambling, although Bingo, of course, is a staple enterprise in many churches. Reverend Tom Grey, a United Methodist minister, Executive Director of the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, explained that the church has “played along” with gambling for the last 40 years, ever since states in financial difficulties began lotteries and such. “Charitable gambling cracked the door and casinos took the door off,” Rev. Grey said.

The reverend believes that gambling will wane as an interest for Americans, just as tobacco did. However, Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr., President and CEO of the AGA, has said that only the Mormons have made any headway against gambling, although Mormons make up 20% of the population of Las Vegas and “most of them work in casinos.”@@
