In the first six months of this year, Denmark’s state-run gaming monopoly Dansk Tipstjeneste turned over nearly DKK 4.4 billion (US$645 million), a rise of DKK 677 million (US$99.3 million) compared to the same period last year.
'The public has gone gambling crazy,” said a company spokesperson. 'It seems the public will risk money on anything - football, horse-racing, the lottery, one-armed bandits - you name it, they'll put money on it.” Though the majority of bets end up with Dansk Tipstjeneste, DanToto, responsible for horse and greyhound racing bets, took DKK 226 million (US$33.1 million), whilst Dansk Automat, which runs one-armed bandits and slot machines, took a whopping DKK 718 million (US$105.3 million), nearly twice as much as last year.
In addition to the billions raked in by Dansk Tipstjeneste, potentially billions of kroner are being sent abroad to internet bookmakers, including many companies which have set up an offshore business address.@@
