Does hockey wagering involve a dime line, or is it 20 cents across the board? Is baseball the only sport which has a dime line at many books?

Generally 20 cents, although some reduced vig shops like Pinny will have cheaper prices. Although, Spinner had dime NHL for a few months ... perhaps coincidentally or not

Yes, but some reduced shop are IIS, Canbet, Pinny, BAS, BetPanam & surely others that I don't know of.

Go open up an acct at Pinnacle, and trust me, you will love betting hockey. Dime lines across. On the Canadian line, the moneyline, and totals. This cannot be beaten. You can have 12 books for hockey with 20 cent lines, and have only Pinnacle, and 9 of every 10 bets will be with Pinnacle, over the other 12 books combined. That's how good Pinnacle is..

BTW, with lines like this, hockey is a sport that can be beaten very easily over a full season.

Thanks for the input. Is it safe to say that baseball presents the most opportunity???

I wouldn't say that. Following Urchin's Golf is the best opportunity on the net

Lander, do you know if Canbet charges a competitive juice rate for NHL.

They are like bases, very competitive when its a near flat line but gets worse as you go out. You will get things like -107 at even situations, but by the time you get to -140 the takeback is near 20 cents and as you go higher you end up getting better prices from 20 cent books. The thing is that Canbet operates seperately from the pack, you often see lines that are far off the prevailing average. I remember times a team would be -120 at Canbet, -125 at Pinnacle and -130/-135 everywhere else so you most definitely have to use them if you play hockey.

You could say that, but I think its the players are more sharp and more numerous. For awhile there was pretty good square action in Vegas and among the locals that took action on it, relatively speaking, once ESPN started showing a lot of games and the league was going through a renaissance with new teams all over the place. Those squares were parted with their money pretty quickly and they went back to being hoops bettors leaving some sharp people around. There have always been sharp people around the game, but the ratio of squares seems to have gone down drastically from what I have been told over the last couple of years, especially with offshores offering action on so many things people got smart and just focused on one thing.

You certainly picked an odd time of year to ask about betting hockey....

Canbet is great (as mentioned above for both different numbers and lower vig teh closer the line is to PICK) for hockey with the biggest drawback being the $200 overnight limits on totals (a dime on sides). On the day of teh game they are 5000/1000 for hockey.

Thanks for the replies. Why do some of you consider hockey a good sport to make money on? What do you look for?

***it is a great sport because unlike sports like football and baseball (and somewhat basketball) the lines are softer because less people bet the NHL than the other 3. if the books make a bad line on the superbowl - come monday their place is a parking lot. if they make a bad line on a columbus/nashville game - 4 people are smart enough to realize it. it's the same reason i would rather play a miami, ohio/ball state game (football or baasketball) than a duke/north carolina game (again - foot or basketball). fewer people will bet the former than the latter - and the books know it - so they can make a softer line for the MAC game than the ACC one - for the public is clueless about the MAC while they will bet the ACC since they have heard of the schools involved.

it's also why whenever you bet the following teams - you NEVER get an "honest line" for the game:

lakers (and bulls when jordan led them to titles)
notre dame football
dallas cowboys
cubs in a future book

the books know the public comes into vegas (or wherever) friday night/saturday morning - sees ND -35 over army - says to themselves, "ND will kill army - i'll lay the 35" without realizing this is a sandwich game for ND who played miami, fl last week and plays usc next week so this is the week they come out flat and look ahead - and only win by 21.

how many people go to vegas every year and just for the heck of it - put $20 on the cubs to win the world series? A LOT! the books know this so instead of giving these people (suckers) 40-1 they only give them 30-1. the people who bet the cubs love the decent odds - but are too stupid to know they are getting a bad number. these are also the same people who will bitch about $2 added to their room as an "energy" cost - yet the $20 they threw away betting the cubs to win it all - was an infinite times dumber waste of money.
