Can someone confirm to me if these fees make sense in the USA.
I just went to a bank here in Jakarta, Indonesia, where they told me that a US$1000 Western Union transfer costs about US$50. Making an ordinary bank transfer costs about US$5.
I understand that these Western Unions arrive kind of instantly, but if speed is not that important why would one still prefer a Western Union transfer?

I'm not sure about US, but in every other country it's a plain RIP-OFF. For example, while in Italy I sent a WU for USD 4000, not only I've been forced to pay in Euros and sum up a commision of USD 23 equivalent, the worst was a rip-off exchange rate due to which I was robbed of more or less USD 300.
This was the first and the last time I deal with WU, the reason I did it's because in Italy it was impossible to do a bank wire without having a bank account and I wanted to avoid the hassle to instruct a bank wire by "remote control" from my bank back in my country of residence.

Btw, how professional are Indonesian banks ? I have had some troubles while doing a transfer to Pointbet. The kind of troubles I wouldn't have with a more or less self-respecting bank...
