How often do we visit posting forums and see “Edited by Moderator” in the subject and upon further review see that two longtime nemesis’s cannot seem to get along on the posting board, so the verbiage exchanged had to be taken down.

As funny as it is, it is reality to see posters bash and flame each other even though they are nowhere in sight of another. Posters will even threaten to perform bodily harm on one another often. Yes, it happens and we have all probably seen it. No matter the distance from or the lack of really knowing one another there seems a desire to acknowledge a fellow poster in a negative way that does not agree with another’s idea or opinion.

It never ceases to amaze me how a few posters in a posting forum seem to think it is their job to point out flaws of others. When digging further you will find that these same posters have a history of finding ways to create turmoil, whether over an opinion, a wrong line posted, or over an addition problem with a posted record.

What seems to be so obvious is that things that lead to food fights are always easy to ignore. There are no words on a posting board of a personal nature that should entice one to respond in a negative fashion. If poster A says “You are a *****”, then why even reply? If Poster C says, “Hey, screw you. You stink at handicapping”, then why the need to reply?

Cant’ we just let it go and move on? After all, the flamers are really seeking some attention and by replying, they get the feeling of success.

When a poster replies in a childish manor to another who has not been so kind to him, then that poster often seems more at fault for allowing the original flamer to get to him. Both are at fault when this occurs, just like in the modern day work rules. If you hit that guy, you are fired. If he hits you back, then he is fired too.

For me it is easy to ignore garbage in a posting forum just as I would ignore the Ex-wife on a phone call. Just listen, or read in this case and let it go in one ear and out the other. Politely say good-bye and move on. The hundreds of others not involved are not impressed by the ability of one to bash another.

There is so much good that can be shared by those who get caught up in posting wars, but they spend more time preparing for their next attack, than they do focusing on educational or informative information that benefits all. Most often we see that the topics of interest end up having to be sorted through to get the good info because of some posting flame war that in most cases is just poppycock.

Is there a cure?

I doubt it. As in all things there are differences of things that serve as feel goods to different folks. Some of these posters feel good when they appear to be getting some attention for flaming.

I do not understand it. Maybe you do.

Have a nice day.

You can have an IGNORE function like yahoo has. If two people are always fighting the moderators could put ignore on there names where any comments made by one would not be seen by the other.

Yeah, this one is easy to answer... just ban the idiots I don't like.

Next question, General?

max1234,

I do not like to refer to posters as idiots. We all have differing opinions. Do you know why it is necessary to fight/bash in a posting forum?

General: necessary? No. Unavoidable? Yes. Why? It's the human condition - some people who would otherwise get along fine in person feel personally threatened when they are disagreed with in a forum, and react out of proportion. You see this every day with 'road rage', when otherwise good people lose it on the highway due to some stupid thing like being cut off - they feel emboldened due to their relative anonymity and respond agressively - the real nuts will actually start shooting, the normal ones might just tailgate and end up causing a crash.

IMHO, it is not possible to prevent it before it happens by reasoning with people. The ignore button sounds good, but otherwise you're faced with the status quo or outright banning.

Lander: you sorry piece of shit!!! lol - didn't you mean 'Republicans' rather than 'republicans'?

btw, some tree-huggers put spikes into old-growth trees so that the loggers chain-saws will rip into them - ever had a chain-saw kickback on you? Yeah, that's peaceful, all right.

lander, if we did that, the remaining posters would figure out a way to tax the r/x members to the point where everyone would move to canada like you.

General,

Yeah, because they're idiots.

You don't see the more intelligent posters getting bashed, do you? It's just mainly the idiots that use the word "lock" and those that scream about some book going under and then 5 minutes late say " awww, they're ok". Or the idiots celebrating when someone goes out of business that actually proved useful to gamblers trying to move money around. Or the real idiots that are happy when people end up in jail for doing the same thing they are.

Max: there are some people on this forum who I'll read every post by, regardless of the topic, and you are one of them.

JJ,

I don't love you but neither do I hate you. You're sort of like that semi-retarded cousin we all have.... fun to play with but it get's tiring after awhile.

Good statement Max.

Why would one continue to play with, fight with, & acknowledge a poster if they were tired of that particular poster?

I always found ignoring to be best.

Another observation I seen yesterday.

When Poster D says Book A is going under, this seems to aggravate some other posters because they disagree with Poster D. So what happens? Book A takes more of a beating possibly, not necessarily, because the posters who disagree, instead of letting the issue die, keep raising it to the top.

I think Book A would just as soon see the topic drop if they are concerned.

But it is another case of posters not being able to disregard another poster when they think he/she is FOS

It's all good. I am just trying to get a good grip on all the mindsets in the posting world. 32,000 posts and still learning.

Still a view that one can be ignored so that he/she does not become aggravated. One minute posters can be great and then minutes later chaos may be erupting.

I hear ya General.

I tend to be pretty quite, help when I can but there are certain personalities that just do not belong here.

You know what I'm talkin' about.

I also noticed my previous post was deleted from here. Fair enough anything to keep the scum from clouding the forums.
