Caffeine jolts runner from victory

Associated Press

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Surinam's only Pan American Games medalist, 800-meter champion Letitia Vriesde, was stripped of her gold medal Sunday after testing positive for excessive caffeine.
Vriesde, the defending champion who also ran at the 2000 Olympics, was her country's first Pan Ams champion when she won at Winnipeg. She also has won silver and bronze medals at the world championships.

It was the first failed doping test at the games.

Pan American Sports Organization president Mario Vasquez Rana said the amount of caffeine in Vriesde's system was equivalent to "five gallons of coffee," and that Vriesde admitted her guilt.

Adriana Munoz of Cuba will now get the gold in the 800.

Studies from as far back as 1991 show that salt activates the same neurological pathways that narcotics do, triggering the brain’s “pleasure center.”
Unlike sugar, which all babies love from birth, salt is an acquired taste. Kids who are exposed to salty foods before six months start to prefer salted over unsalted foods, while kids who aren’t exposed don’t. Today, more than three-quarters of Americans’ weekly salt intake comes from processed foods.
And to manufacturers, salt isn’t just salt; food producer Cargill sells 40 different types with different chemical structures. Each one is optimized for certain uses, and they have fun names like “Special Flake,” “Fine Flake Improved,” and “Shur-Flo Fine Flour Salt.”

Suprised this doesn't get talked about more. With as bad of a wrap as soft drinks and juices, which are a large contributing factor to increasing obesity, salt also plays a large roll.

I would think that much coffee would make one so jittery it would have a reverse reaction on being able to run fast because of twitching.

That's why foods labeled as "Healthy" or "Fat Free" are actually worse for you than regular ones because fats main purpose is for flavoring, take fat out and youu take flavor out, which they replace with Salt. Sodium is a killer. If you know how to convert where calories came from in foods, then more than likely, you're better off buying the original, and a lot of foods labeled as "bad for you", aren't so bad really...
