Herb Brooks, coach of 1980's "Miracle on Ice" gold medal hockey team, and Hall of Famer, has died in a car crash

Hockey legend Herb Brooks died Monday afternoon following a single car crash outside Forest Lake on Interstate 35.

There are few details confirmed as yet, but it is known that Brooks, 66, died in a rollover crash.

Brooks coached the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal. He returned to Olympic coaching last year, leading the American team to a silver medal. Brooks also went to the Olympics as a player in 1964 and 1968.

As a college coach, Brooks led the Golden Gophers to NCAA titles in 1974,1976, and 1978.

Brooks coached the Minnesota North Stars from 1997 to 1998. He also coached the New York Rangers from 1981 to 1985, the New Jersey Devils in the 1992-93 season and did a stint at the helm of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Brooks remained active in hockey. Brooks spent last weekend at a celebrity golf tournament sponsored by the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth. Last night he attended a banquet and awards ceremony. He was inducted into the Hall in 1990 and the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999
