if any of you are getting those annoying grey pop-up ads in windows xp, there is a way to stop them.

you simply have to turn off the messenger service built into xp that is allowing them to come through.

here is a link to the page i found that gives you the instructions on how to do it.

THANK YOU, RPM!!

Will this hinder the ability to use other IM services like Yahoo IM and MSN IM?

Absolutely not. This is a built in Windows NT messenger ... you may have seen simliar "messages" from network printer if you were on a LAN of some sort. Apparently some annoying little fuknut hackers figured out how to spam message the entire cable modem LAN (domain) and use it to advertise.

instead of disabling the service you could have less elegantly went to the Command Prompt and typed
> net stop messenger
to turn it back on type
> net start messenger
to send a message type
> net send [computer_name] Your message goes here.

ok, enough about that shitty useless program. just disable it like RPM said

Here's how to stop them without any paid service.

Disabling the Messenger Service
To remove the ability for anyone in the world to pop up messages on your computer, you can disable the Messenger service. Its easy to reverse at a later time if you wish to do so.

Windows 2000
Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows XP Home
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows XP Professional
Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
Click Services
Double click Services Scroll
down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows NT
Click Start ->Control Panel
Double Click Administrative Tools
Select Services-> Double-click on Messenger
In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop,
Then choose Disable as the Startup Type
Click OK

Windows 98 & ME
Windows Messenger Service cannot be disabled

while we are at it can someone tell me how i can access and change the setting for programs that load whenever i turn on my pc? How can i change the start up settings in other words?

Btw, couldn't anyone take them to court on intrusion of privacy charges? Phone marketteers, cold calling, is in some places considered illegal, isn't the self same thing when these bums over at microsoft constantly harass you to either contact them or download some shit from their website?

if a website your at tries to open a new window, it will block it. so long as you know whats happening its pretty easy to deal with.

my laptop was getting 20 or so grey popups a night before I slapped this on there, now it gets zero. my regular computer got very few grey pop-ups but for some reason the laptop got crazy amounts of them.
