As everyone knows it goes to the Senate Thursday. There is no doubt this is going to pass. When the president signs off you better not have any money in offshore accounts. You can kiss it all goodbye. Most of their business comes form U.S.A. The online casino's will burn all of you.

Where did you read that it's going to the Senate on Thursday?

I'm not calling you a liar, but I search for info on this pretty regularly and haven't heard on anything being scheduled.

On Thursday, July 31st, the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee will vote on the bill, S. 627, the so-called Unlawful Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act.

We need your help. This is one of our last chances to keep the government's hands off the Internet. After the House of Representatives passed this bill a month ago, we need to make our voices heard. We need to contact our Senators and tell them to vote against this bill.

Many thought it would not even go to Senate yet. There are many inner working not reported here. The congress and Senate have worked it out. Keep talking about online gambling as if you have nothing to worry about. It is all over.

Propably, but agents don't want to mess with little players such as me. They want the heavy hitters!
That's why this will suck if it passes!!

Thur. is a committee vote not the full Senate. If it passes the committee vote then it must be placed on the full Senate calender. If it gets placed late in the calender that usually means that the powers that be are not that interested in the bill, however an early spot means it just might pass.

printman-

Let's not get our panties in a knot just yet. Even if it gets out of committee and gets through the Senate, it still also needs to be acted on in the house, etc, etc. This is not something that is going to happen overnight, and it is far from a sure thing.

Also, most sources seem to think this will have no bite as far as the individual gambler goes. Yes, it will make getting money offshore harder, but this is far from the end of the offshore gambling industry.

Let's not also forget that Antigua is petitioning the WTO to stop the U.S. from trying to crack down on offshore gambling.

Senate committee means little, just that I am surprised it got there so quick. I am sorry don't have any sources like I did in the House, the Senate is a completely different animal.

I wouldn't even speculate on what passes. The thing is that a lot of people have said "we will pass something then tack on the penalties in adjustment". Now how can anyone know what will come out of that? That is like saying we can't get things done in a normal fashion, but once we get behind closed doors we will work out a deal we could never pass in regular voting. Such a load of crap. I have just about given up on this. To put it simply, I don't know. I don't know if it will pass. I don't know what form it would pass in. I don't know what penalties it will have or who would be penalized. I don't know who is responsible to enforce it. I don't know what industries or activities will get carveouts. There are a ton of what ifs and frankly I don't think ANYONE can say until they see the version of the bill that would go to W to sign, if it gets that far. If someone else claims to know before then, they are SPECULATING. This is exactly the reason why I always say Congress has too much time on its hands and falsely believes it has mandates to "do something". In sum this bill has little general support, but even worse it has even less opposition. While there are a lot of groups that might oppose it, they could get some ambiguous carveout that could get them on board. And there are a lot of things that a reasonable judge could find in the final bill that would get it tossed out if someone fights it. For that reason alone its in the interest of Kyl and others to carve it out left and right hoping that they avoid getting it tossed back at them.

So worry if you want, but I don't bother with it. I don't think they will stop anyone with whatever they might pass and I don't think the conditions for sports betting will be any better or worse a year or two from now than they are today. Illegal betting has flourished for over a century with far tougher burdens to stop it, why should ineffective legislation stop anyone from betting now as technology has made betting more simple and reachable for the masses?

Posters that say the billion dollar off-shore business is over if this passes are just plain retarded. Ignore the idiot "printman". You already can't use a credit card so if Congress passes a law that says you can't use a credit card how is that going to destroy the off-shore business? Impossible to stop people from sending WU to whomever so I am not concerned with this bill.
