Ephedra. Baseball teams should take action to protect their players.

Are you a Doctor? Are you a biochemist. Should your freedom to eat what you want be taken away by crackpots preaching junk science theories? Let's operate on fact not paranoia and rumors. More than 10% of the population has taken Ephedra without ill effects.

I am neither, but I will not buy that adding a drug to your diet which accelerates ones heart rate while performing in athletics which already has the heart rate accelerated is a good thing for a person. It has the potential to kill one. That is ones choice but if I'm a team owner, then I am going to ask my players to reduce that chance, for the better of the team & the confidence of my management that the players are doing well without the aid of an accelerant in the diet.

Doctor General

Thanks for your invaluable expert medical insights. I predict that your brilliant post may win you a Nobel prize for science. (current odds +100 trillion) Just out of curiousity, what medical school did you graduate from? I'd like to mention several other things athletes should avoid, because like Ephedra they can cause an elevated heart rate:

1 - Running
2 - Playing before a large crowd
3 - Looking at their paycheck

I don't think you thought this out. Have you ever drank caffeine?? If not it's trivial but the point is valid.

LOL. This is just for debate guys. No need to worry about respect or insults. Just state your thoughts and we can discuss. I hope just because my opinion may differ from yours, it is no reason to not respect each other.

Sure. I have had some in my diet occasionaly. Mountain Dew is about as tough as it gets for me, very seldom. I think cold medicine has a small effect as well. Eating a handfull of tablets and then going to practice seems a bit further to me. I remember as a high school football player eating 357's before games. Got sick to the stomach mostly. That ill feeling worried me.

You did not have enough gas in your tank(food/carbs) to burn before you ate them.

Ephedrine operates on the same principle. Wake up in the morning and pop ephedra and you will want to puke. But if you eat a solid breakfast with your OJ and pop some ephedra at 11am and you will be set. Ephedra is a HUGE carb burner and a water burner. If you overload on ephedra you will find yourself pissing every 5 minutes. This takes about 200-300MG at once to do this. FDA recommends no more than 100MG a day.

Caffeine is just like putting premium gas in your car and ephedra is just like putting supercharger on your car. If your body can handle it more power to you. A geo metro could not handle a nitrous system while a dodge viper might be able to run on it for a long time(shitty analogy but its quick and it works).

We put caffeine, sugar, everything into our system to improve our performance. Putting something in your system to speed up your blood flow does not make you some sort of weak person it just means you are willing to push your body harder to obtain more desirable results for a short period of time.

Not only does ephedra stimulate blood flow but it also expands the lungs making the world alot better for people who have sports asthma.
When i would play sports my legs wouldn't be tired and my body would feel strong but i couldn't give my 100% because i wasn't getting enough oxygen to my blood cells. For me ephedra solved this.

Pseudoephedrine is in most nasal sprays and asthma medicines.

On a side note to the general: Seeing as personal attacks in this forum are so prevalent and you are such a valuable member of the RX community i wanted to make sure you did not take any of my posts as a personal attack but merely a counter opinion.
