COLLEGE WIN TOTALS POSTED
7/28/03 - Stephen Nover

More and more sports books are posting NFL regular season 'over/under' win totals.

Though college football win totals are not as common, the Imperial Palace Hotel in Las Vegas is one place that has them.

The IP lists 30 teams, with Kansas State’s 11 wins the highest total. Iowa and UNLV have the lowest, with six victories each.

"These are probably the toughest numbers to make because you have to go through the whole schedule," Imperial Palace race and sports book director Jay Kornegay said.

"It's not just the teams you're making a number on, but everybody on their schedule. We look at about 100 schools because we put up 30 teams."

Oklahoma is just below Kansas State with 10 ½ wins. The Sooners are followed by Ohio State, Texas and Virginia Tech with an 'over/under' number of 10.

Ted Sevransky, a professional handicapper in Las Vegas, already has two opinions on the IP's numbers. Normally Sevransky likes to play 'under' a team's total. However, he believes Arizona State will go 'over' the IP's listed number of 7 1/2.

"I'm a big Dirk Koetter fan," Sevransky said of the Sun Devils coach. "He's the guy who made the Boise State program out of nothing. They really showed strides last year of having that same explosive Boise State offense. The athleticism of that team is unbelievable."

With junior quarterback Andrew Walter having a breakthrough season last year - and all five offensive linemen returning - the Sun Devils shouldn't have problems scoring. However, record-setting sack man Terrell Suggs is no longer part of that defense.

"I think the offense is going to score a lot of points," Sevransky said. "The defense offers some value. Yes, they lost their big name guy, Terrell Suggs, who everyone knows about. But they have a lot of guys back, and it's a quality defense. I think they may be the surprise of the Pac-10."

Arizona State is one of four Pac-10 teams listed on the 'prop,' along with Southern Cal ('over/under' eight wins), Washington (eight wins) and UCLA (7 1/2 wins).

Sevransky's also believes North Carolina State will go 'under' 8 1/2 victories.

"They have a very tough schedule that includes Ohio State, Texas Tech, Florida State, Maryland and Virginia," he said of the Wolfpack.

North Carolina State won a school-record 11 games last year. The Wolfpack may have trouble sneaking up on anybody this season and will be breaking in a new set of defensive linemen.

"They had a magical season last year facing a relatively weak schedule," Sevransky said. "This year, the schedule is more difficult. Look at what happened to their offensive and defensive lines."

The Wolfpack set a team record with 48 sacks last year. Now those defensive linemen are gone.

"I don't think their defense is going to be anywhere near what it was in 2002," Sevransky said.

North Carolina State must play at Ohio State in the third game of the season. The Wolfpack finish their regular season with games against Virginia, Florida State and Maryland. The Seminoles get the Wolfpack at home and have double-revenge. It's not often you find Florida State in a double-revenge spot.

The strength of the Atlantic Coast Conference is a key to Sevransky's handicapping.

"I think the ACC is going to be a much more difficult conference than last year," he said. "There were a number of teams who really under-performed."

Some of the current 'over/under' totals at the IP, include Miami at 9 1/2, Auburn at 8 1/2, Notre Dame at eight, Penn State at 7 1/2, Florida at seven and Colorado at 6 1/2.
