All This Over A Nickel?

In the November 2002 LVA, we reported on the strange case of a 73-year-old Michigan women who found a nickel at the Detroit MotorCity casino and attempted to play it, only to be ultimately barred from the property for six months after a standoff with a security guard over her find. (A casino rule against "silver mining," when a patron plays with found money, was cited in the barring.) The women sued, and the case was eventually kicked up to federal court after both sides rejected an initial settlement offer of $17,000.

Now, a federal jury has ordered MotorCity casino to pay the woman $875,000. The fate of the original nickel remains unknown

All because of a Security Guard that was a Jealous Sheriff.

A classic case of The Clerk Syndrome

Gee he could of just let her have the 5 cents...it's only a nickle. And I doubt there is much Silver in it...

I bet the Security Guard studied the old laws there more than management just waiting for a chance to use this knowledge of this old law.

The Clerk Syndrome has created more B.S. lawsuits than anything.

TTinCO - If this is a Civil Case the losing party has to pay the court costs.

Sounds like it is probably is a Civil case.

Yes Civil Case losing party pays the court fees. The casino makes enough money anyways at least in this case they gave some back
