Last night about 7 pm someone hit a telephone pole causing all the electricity to go out here. It was off only about 3 minutes--But when it came back on --I heard a loud "pop" sound from where my computer is plugged into the protector. All the electricy was back on, so I tried to turn my computer back on. NOTHING. I looked down at the surge protector and heard a little humming sound. So I disconnected. It was very hot to handle. Went to Circuit City and bought another one. Came home and replugged everything back and it worked!! Whew-I can't tell ya the relief--as I don't have an extra $1600. laying around and besides many of my programs will only work on Windows 98!
So take my advice and get a new surge protector every couple of years. The salsman says that is about the life of them up to three years. I thought computer was cooked as the protector was 3 yeras old (About $40)!!! Well Worth It!!
