Why do most books only pay 10-1 on 4 team parlays?

I always knew the 10-1 odds on a 4 team parlay was a ripoff, as you could take the 3 team parlay money (winnings) and then place it on a straight wager for a bigger profit. Ex. $100 3 teamer pays 600, Take the $700 and place it on a straight wager, 700 to win 636 = 1336. As opposed to getting 1100 back (100 + 1000). 236 dollars less!

Why don't more books offer 11, 12 or even 13 to 1? I know, more $ for the books and less risk, but seems the $236 difference is too big!

One word, juice.

You want to take a shot at a book with a parlay, you have to pony up some more green.

Most books out there won't even take larger parlays any more. Many of them don't see the value in a $50 versus $100,000 risk/reward. I'm talking about 10 team parlays.

Exactly. If each team has a 50% chance of beating the number (for the sake of this argument), the payout should be (excluding baseball ML's w/true parlay odds):
(1/2)*(1/2)*(1/2)*(1/2) = 1/16
Your payout should be 15:1

Any idiot taking 10:1 deserves to lose his money. Most people dont even know how much they are being shortchanged for any exotic wagers. Thats why most of the gambling public is filled with losers.

The only time a parlay should be placed is when there is a corrletion between two events. Two plays with -EV will not yield +EV.

WTF does Pedro at -300 and R. Johnson at -320 have to do with each other.

I'm not a parlay player and unless used sparingly in certain situations are not good for your bankroll. I never touched them in the past at all. As I learned more I now have system plays in hockey, baseball, and a very select few in football when there is a correlation I feel is to my advantage. The guidelines are very strict though for me and account for less than 7% of my plays. I don't know enough to use them any more than this productively. Blindly playing 3 seperate events hoping to hit all three to win 6-1 or whatever is not a positive expectation in my view. Could be wrong though.

Teasers also can be used to a players advantage if played in the right situation. There's a few things about these but that's all I can think to say on this right now....
