Football: Costa Rica Beats Cuba to Advance to CONCACAF Quarterfinals

Costa Rica's football (soccer) team defeated Cuba 3-0 in Foxboro, Massachusetts Wednesday, to win Group-D and advance to the quarterfinals of the 16-nation CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.

Walter Centeno scored in first-half injury time, while Steven Bryce and Erick Scott added second half goals to complete the shutout.

Costa Rica's victory means it avoids playing the unbeaten defending champion, Team USA. Steve Sampson, the former U.S. coach who is now leading Costa Rica, says the U.S. squad is playing the best soccer right now.

Cuba, which won its first match Monday against Canada also advanced, and will face the United States in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Cuba clinched the second spot in Group-D, while Canada was eliminated.

Costa Rica will face El Salvador in the quarterfinals. Marvin Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to give El Salvador a 1-0 win over Martinique and clinch the second spot in Group C.

Yeah and pretty soon they are going to win the Americas Cup you watch. After all if you can make a rickety 30 year fishing boat go 90 miles imagine what you could do with a $50 million sailboat

thanks general but beating cuba is hardly something we can take pride in....it was great because we unexplainably lost to canada in the first match so we needed it but cuba doesnt really have a soccer team...

regardless were through to the next round and hopefully we"ll start scoring at least on one of the 183,842 chances we get per game...

Call it the Steve Sampson disease

I saw in the press they made an interesting point, would Cuba want to win their next game and be forced to play in MIAMI?

And you thought it was tough playing on the road imagine that one. Well to do it they would have to beat the US, not all that likely as it is. The Sunday games look pretty good, Colombia brought a decent team and play Brazil. Jamaica looks like they brought an A team but get this terrible draw to play in Mexico. Still I am not convinced about this Mexico team. While they did advance, I am still thinking they have got to be kidding with this no offense version that they have fielded the last 6 months. They score goals about once every other game so that means they better win this next game 1-0. On Saturday I would be shocked if El Salvador gave the Ticos much of a fight (although with Sampson you never know and El Salvador did beat Mexico a few weeks ago) and the US should win without breaking much of a sweat over the Cubans.
