Punters fear they may have lost thousands of pounds after a London bookmaker mysteriously closed last week.
Chris and Nick Velounias, the twin brothers behind the independent Burns Bookmakers, are believed to have left the premises on Monday last week. Customers now have no idea where the brothers are and police are investigating allegations that numerous bets have been left unpaid. One punter, who refused to be named, claimed he was owed a four-figure sum. 'How do I feel about it? Angry. I knew the brothers well — I used to think they were a likeable pair. I don't find them that likeable anymore,' he said, showing remarkable restraint.
The company stopped trading on Friday when its telephone credit operation system stopped taking calls. The brothers' flat was found deserted shortly afterwards. It is understood they may have gone to Ireland, where Chris has property, but Scotland Yard has alerted police forces across Europe.
