Three Men Gored in Spanish Bull Run

MADRID, Spain - Bulls gored three Spaniards and cut or bruised at least 10 other people — including an American teen-ager — in a particularly dangerous stampede during the San Fermin Fiesta.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening from the bull run through Pamplona's crowded cobblestone streets on the festival's fourth day.

Mariano Lorente, 27, of Pamplona, was in serious condition at Navarre Hospital after surgery for an injury to his abdomen, the hospital said.

Two other men from Pamplona were attacked in the shoulder and buttock by the charging bulls from the Jandina ranch, famous for their speed.

As on the previous three days of the festival, six heavily muscled bulls plodded through the streets in a four-minute dash to the arena, where they would face bullfighters later in the day.

Among the runners injured by falling was a 14-year-old American, who was unidentified. Another runner slipped on the cobblestones and fell in front of the stumbling bulls but suffered only minor injuries.

Near the end of the run, one bull separated from the others at the bull ring and charged the crowd for more than a minute before entering the stables to applause from the crowd.

More than 1 million people are expected to visit Pamplona during the eight-day festival, which ends Sunday.

The runs, or "encierros," draw thousands of people testing their bravery and speed by running with the bulls.

Fame of the centuries-old festival, which features a nonstop street party, increased with the 1926 publication of Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun Also Rises."
