The Home Run Derby will be missing two of the biggest gate attractions in the game.

Sluggers Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa -- Bonds was selected to the NL All-Star team, Sosa was not -- will both skip the festivities the day before the July 15 game at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the Chicago White Sox.

Bonds, the single-season home run king, said Monday that he will not take part in the contest. Bonds set an all-time record by hitting 73 homers in 2001.

quote:
When asked why he would not participate, Bonds told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "Because I'm a grown man and I don't have to do it."
"Did Michael Jordan play in the slamfest every year?" Bonds asked. "Nobody asked him why. I'm 30-something years old. They didn't even ask me. Go ahead and get mad at me. Say what you want, but no."

Sosa told reporters Sunday that he also would not participate in the Home Run Derby, even though it will be held in Chicago. In recent years, baseball's four leading home-run hitters were invited to the Derby and selected others were given courtesy invitations.

Sosa, who's missed 17 games this season because of a toe ailment and another seven due to a suspension for cork being discovered in one of his bats, was invited to participate but decided to take the full three days off after learning he didn't get selected to the team. Sosa had been on the last five NL All-Star teams.

Bonds and Sosa have combined for 1,151 homers in their careers. They are currently 1-2 in career home runs among active players.

NL manager Dusty Baker, the manager of Sosa's Cubs, made the ultimate decision to bypass his top star for the game.

"Since Sammy wasn't voted by the players or by the fans ... I think it might be a good idea that Sammy use this break and go underground," Baker said.

Sammy would look kind of foolish hitting 500 foot bombs after the corking incident.

Not to mention the junk that the fans would be yelling at him.

Barry has a point about MJ ...

how would the Giants do if Barry pulled a muscle in this silly contest?? Not too well, I imagine.

He couldn't just say something along those lines?

When asked why he would not participate, Bonds told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
"Because I'm a grown man and I don't have to do it."
"Did Michael Jordan play in the slamfest every year?" Bonds asked. "Nobody asked him why. I'm 30-something years old. They didn't even ask me. Go ahead and get mad at me. Say what you want, but no."

Barry is just misunderstood. He doesn't want the media hounding him like he's Price Willie (or whatever that little imbred English wanker's name is) ... this is his way of ensuring a little privacy.

Barry has taken the

Question is can Barry handle the heat. He was brought over here because he can handle the heat.

I totall agree w/ Bonds here. Jordan stopped w/ the slam dunk contest after a few years.
Why should Bonds have to partake in a stupid
HR contest. A player can screw up his swing or hurt himself in a HR contest. Good job Barry.
I'm glad he isn't participating.

If doesn't want to take part in the HR derby, fine. But I agree with Unc. B he is the biggest asshole in MLB. When he was in Pittsburgh he and Leyland got into a row in spring training because Barry didn't want to stretch with the rest of the team. Barry said it "Wasn't in my contract I have to stretch-out with the team." Leyland responded "I don't care what your contract says, your on my team, you'll do what I say." He did stretch. While there he also called the entire city of Pittsburgh racist because when he returned to Pittsburgh has was jeered yet when Sid Bream returned (a white player) he was cheered. In SF he has a private locker room with a lazy-boy and TV while everyone else has a wooden bench. And in SF warm-ups are optional for Barry. Barry spells teamwork with 8 "I's".

Barry Bonds is a great if not the greatest baseball player to ever play but he is also an uneducated, opinionated, Racist. I don't like him but I respect his play and his baseball work ethic and its his choice whether to compete in the contest!

Do I like him? Hell no!
Would I want to hang out with him? Hell no!

He's a "bum" who can play baseball and I am not impressed by his overall attitude towards his fans, unfortunately he forgets what and whom this game is played for! He is "an all about me" kind of person! I can only hope he never gets his ring!

Not to detract from the fact that the man is a good player, but Barry Bonds isn't even in the top 50 best players of all time, in my opinion.

Wow , I had to read that one twice to make sure it was what you really meant.

He is easily in the top 10, but the greatest player ever in my opinion was Babe Ruth followed by Joe Dimaggio.

i cannot stand barry bonds. he is a shining example of what is wrong with professional sports today. that being said, to say he is not in the top 50 ballplayers of all-time is insane. he is the best hitter i have ever seen.

I think Barry realizes there's no "i" in team, but he has figured out there's an "m" and an "e".

Barry Bonds has let his success go to his head. He now thinks that he is bigger than the game itself.
