Who are the best and worst posters?
It's a tough question because everyone has different likes and dislikes. Nevertheless, the question was e-mailed to various people involved in offshore wagering and familiar with posting forums.
The responses varied, of course. One thing's for sure, though. JJGold is not going to win any prizes for best poster.
So just who are the best and worst posters? Before throwing out names, we must set criteria.
Many things can make a good poster. Louis Cypher and Clevfan drew mention because they often provide pertinent information cutting and pasting articles. However, as the Cleveland teams figure to improve, one must wonder if Clevfan still will want to devote as much time to doing this.
Other posters are valuable because of their handicapping skills, such as Kodiak, Dogball, Holy Bull and Big Lou to name a few. Unless a handicapper is red-hot, or already has a built-in following, just throwing out a pick doesn't mean much unless there is sound written reasoning behind it.
The best posting forum sites not only have these types, but feature posters who are informative, objective, straight shooters and know what's going on.
Unfortunately, some of these quality posters can lose patience and not have the thick skin needed to put up with the many bad posters. The result is fewer quality posts.
"Most of these posters are idiots," said one bookmaker experienced with posting forums. "Yes, there are some good ones, but there are hundreds of bad ones."
Because of this, posting forums can be littered by flamers and those with agenda-driven threads and replies.
"The worst posters are those who just ridicule someone and have no substance," said Krackman, a professional bettor.
Another professional gambler who has cut back on his posting said, "It is pointless to try to have an online discussion with guys who think they know everything, and I do mean everything."
The names that were cited most frequently on the worst poster list include Beantownjim, JJgold, Peep, Railbird and Vega.
One comment turned in about Vega read, "He’s in a class by himself. He should be a pro scammer if he is not already."
While some may find JJgold and Peep's posts worthless and a waste of space, others may enjoy and find them informative. This is the subjective nature of posting forums and why doing a survey on it can be elusive.
Beantownjim and Railbird are so politically incorrect they make Bill Maher blush. Beantownjim is either a great put-on artist or the most racist person in America. Some believe he should be banned from all posting forums. Others, however, find him hilarious and entertaining.
Then there are those who believe Beantownjim should be banned for continually typing in all capital letters.
Many names were mentioned for best poster. Some didn't make the top list because they've scaled back on their posting. Mr. White, Poker Joe, LV711, Hartley, 3rd & Long, Marlowe, Trujillo and Machiavelli are among that group.
Sadly, Super Scout and Madame X, two of the better posters, have passed away.
So after viewing e-mails sent by posters, lurkers, moderators, bettors and bookmakers, the following are the names cited most frequently as being outstanding posters.
Krackman, TTinco, Halifax, Neilm, Nero, Walk of Life, Winky Duck, Patrick McIrish, Uncle Butternutts, The General, Joey C, Philosopher, Reno, Lander, Wild Bill and Judge Wapner.
"Judge Wapner is a great all around guy," wrote Dante, a moderator for Rx. "He's always there to help new posters and give insight to the betting world from Costa Rica."
Said one professional gambler, "TTinco and Halifax seem to be more interested in what is right as opposed to having an agenda. They are rare."
Uncle Butternutts drew praise for his ability to often find humorous pictures to illustrate his points.
On Wild Bill, Dante said, "Classy poster right there on top of the gambling laws who provides great insight to the legal matters around net gambling."
Patrick McIrish scored high grades for his knowledge, fairness and ability to pen thoughtful, well-crafted posts.
Neilm, Philosopher, Reno, Joey C and Krackman received accolades for their experience and posting forum substance, while Lander was cited for technical expertise.
Winky Duck is a multi-talented poster who not only handicaps, but also has some great tout bashing stories.
The General does a lot of work as an Rx moderator. "He helps everyone and is not afraid to jump into the fray with a poster book conflict," wrote Dante.
Perhaps at the Rx's party next month in Las Vegas a first-ever Poster of the Year Trophy can be given out?
Black tie would be optional.
