SoCal's might be the dumbest bunch of idiots residing in the US ( Winky being the exception ). I bet over 50% were ticket scalpers if they did further checks.

your analysis would be correct max if not for the fact that 699 of the 700 were tourists from arizona

Funny shit max....In reality, 99% of them were probably DF tourists who thought it was just a big lake & had no idea what a rip tide was.

Frank, from what I've heard it's not anything that you'll have to worry about.

You'll float

Rip Tides can kill very easily... I was a lifeguard , saw four people die at the resort over 5 yrs in the mid 80`s...Last week at the same resort a woman drowned after trying to save her two kids, sadly the kids witnessed this...

I grew-up around and loved the Gulf of Mex. There were 'undertows' in the gulf but nothing like the rip tides on the coasts!

I guess they had them big time on the Mich & I think 7 went down yesterday on the Chicago shore....now there's a first that I've heard of.

But yes, the west coast if BRUTAL....I've been in a couple & it's no big deal IF you know what to do. You know it as well as I do(and probably more so).

Well most people don`t know what to do and its very easy to get out if you don`t panic

You can sometimes identify a rip current by its foamy and choppy surface. The water in a rip current may be dirty (from the sand being turned up by the current). The water may be colder than the surrounding water. Waves usually do not break as readily in a rip current as in adjacent water.

If caught in a rip current, try to relax. A rip current is not an "undertow" -- it will not pull you under. Do not try to swim against the current as this is very difficult, even for an experienced swimmer. If you can do so, tread water and float. Call or wave for assistance. You can also try to swim parallel to shore until you are out of the current, then swim directly toward shore...

TT,

I believe in natural selection. Has anyone seen a Railbird post lately. I know the sharks wouldn't eat his ass just out of professional courtesy but hope springs eternal.

I live 5 minutes from the State Park where it happened in Michigan yesterday. All happened in a 3-mile stretch of Lake Michigan. All but one was from Chicago. There was a storm that came up very fast and there were many boats on the lake. Three of them have not been found yet.

Jman, I was always told to swim parallel to the shore & you'll be out of the rip in no time-and it's never failed for me.

I've been on the CA coast about 8 days in my life-and I know that much.

Fair, that makes more sense.

Boats-especially small ones, are bad bad news when things get shitty.

Yes, I said swimming parallel to shore is best ...they can be as wide as 50 yards , I`ve never seen one that big though...When they do show up, its a long day for the guards...

I don't think any were in boats. I know the three that are missing (presumed dead) were rescuing another (alive). The biggest problem is there is no money in the state budget for lifeguards. There were red flags posted but that didn't stop anyone.
