David - lesson 1: when a game has started and has been off for a decent amount of time, and a team has suffered a significant injury or one team has gained a significant advantage, or some other event allows one to see an advantage, and that game is still erroneously listed on a sportsbook, then the act of betting that game to one's PERCEIVED advantage using after-the-fact knowledge unavailable to any other bettor is unethical - it is called 'cheating'. Whether you actually win or not is irrelevant - you knowingly sought to evade restrictions to profit on your deception, figuring that the odds would be in your favor. If it was accidental, that's another subject, but you spoke of ethics which would be something YOU practiced, and so if you knowingly post-bet a game with the intent to gain an unfair advantage on that wager, then you have shown a lack of ethics.

The book has a free shot at you if you past post, they're either keeping your money or canceling the bet - & then booting your sorry ass. Hey Lander, I never really went away, just having too much fun in retirement. For the hell of it I killed a whole ****ing week last week by just reading - hadn't read much for 15 years - naturally it was hard to get by the pictures and stick figures in 'Jane and Spot do Dallas' but it was worth all the hours

As for a book leaving up a game accidentally, and a player past posting, it doesn't matter.
The game has an offical start time. The wagers are taken with the timestamp recorded. If the software (or lines manager) fails to close a game, the timestamp can be used to accept/reject the wager.
It's a void wager. Period. The players should not be expected to check the start times of the games or know if there has been a delay.
This is slightly complicated by books that leave the game open for a few extra minutes as it is starting, to get in some extra bets. They leave themselves open to player advantage if an early score occurs. This should be avoided (but most books would take the risk for the extra cash). If the start time of the game is set to the next day or off by an hour, then this is a clear mistake. All bets taken after the official start time should be voided, without exception. In the case of a rain delay, the league official start time should be obtained.
Of course, all the machines should be set to the corrrect time. (Some books run their clocks a minute slow or fast on purpose, but I think that is a bad idea, as it make hit harded to figure out when things really happpened.)
