ARCADIA, Calif. -- Bettors wanting to select alternate runners for horses scratched from Pick 6 races will see that option restored for Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting that opens Sept. 28.

The option was eliminated after last year's Breeders' Cup Pick 6 scandal and security upgrades at tracks nationwide automatically replaced any scratched horse with the favorite in a particular race.

During last year's Breeders' Cup at Arlington Park, an Autotote employee used his job to manipulate Pick 6 tickets, resulting in a $3 million payoff. Such a wager requires bettors to correctly choose the winners of six consecutive races.

Santa Anita will host the Breeders' Cup on Oct. 25.

After urging from the California Horse Racing Board, Autotote has developed software upgrades that would reintroduce alternate betting selections without compromising security for the Pick 6.

The upgrades will permit the scanning of all wagers placed on the Pick 6 on a race-by-race basis and transmit pertinent details to the host track. Any changes to those wagers would be automatically detected, said Dave Payton, western sales manager for Autotote, which services totalizator systems at California's racetracks.
