The Dutch are officially closing their doors to any foreign online betting sites. Any that try are going to find themselves out of pocket. Unless, of course, they’ve got themselves a license from the Dutch government.
To ram the point home the Netherlands government have taken about eighty betting sites from around the world to court simultaneously. Roughly sixty of those are reported to have backed out immediately, preferring instead to continue targeting other countries. Well, for the moment there are still plenty more to choose from.
Instead of facing a fine of 10,000 euros a day they complicity agreed to block Dutch residents from gambling on their sites. As for the stubborn few remaining…well whether they ever pay up the fines is another matter. Still, quite a victory fro the Dutch. A rare thing in itself.
Motives are abound for the Dutch crackdown. Why should their residents pay money into foreign coffers? Hardly a fraction, if any, of the profit made from the online betting community even goes back into the sports business it leeches off. Then, you could just face facts and point out they simply wanted a monopoly of online gambling on their own people.
But then I’d bet so would a lot of other countries, Australia, for example. If they take up where the Dutch left off and insist online betting sites use the technology available to them to track their punters and reject natives from countries that don’t want foreign competition the face of international gambling could be changed on a global scale.
And I thought there was nothing wrong with a little healthy competition and customer choice. Does the Dutch government really have the right to ban it’s own people from using the internet to gamble against someone in Tahiti on a site based in London? Apparently so.@@@
