I like it just the way it is. Some what "ify" which keeps the mainstream public out of it. I truly believe it could become a problem if deemed legal in the USA.

Legalization = public acceptance

public acceptance = more square bettors

more square bettors = juicier lines for those who pay attention to what they are doing

juicier lines = more money for me

Bring on the squares! Legalize it! Can you imagine how nice it would be to have every average Joe laying money on these games? Most offshore action right now is "relatively" sharp.

But on the other hand, Legalization = taxes on winning = evasion = legal action = offshore, so basically is a circle.

It will never happen in the way we have it offshore or even in Nevada. The leagues won't accept it first off. Even if you got past that, then you face the fact that states will treat it as a piggybank and screw us all over. Think Oregon, where a 4-team parlay pays 5-1...those would be the types of odds offered by legalized sports betting in the US.

I don't like "ify".
I do like legalization as competition will help EVERYONE. IMO.
Without competition you have monolopys, which are rarely good for the average Joe.
Legalization also in whatever form it starts make us seem more like "mainstream folks" to MANY that do not regard ANY of us as "normal".
I find nothing but positives from the legalization, but I respect Wild Bill's opinion.

That would be nice, but you miss my point. There won't be anything near "open" competition. That is a simple fact of states trying to protect their lottery and casino revenues. In fact since the early 90s when all the riverboat states opened up, most states have decided that keeping their lottery in control of slot machines is the way to go. If there was a way for sports betting to get through, the same exact thing is certain to happen, of that I have no doubt. The lottery vendors would be crying foul if it wasn't that way, they make machines and systems for sports lotteries around the world and would be telling them about how much money they could make. Sports lotteries are highly profitable for the jurisdiction, they usually have holds of 20-30%, a level at which sports betting is completely unprofitable for anyone to bet seriously. All that would come of it would be parlay cards of all varieties with just horrible odds. If you want an idea of how bad the odds are just look at some Canadian lottery website, just about every province has a sports related lottery with such gems like "a basketball game that ends with a team winning by 5 or less points is a tie" so if you picked a team they would essentially have to win by 6. So you have three choices on each game and a huge takeout related to every one of them. That is what legalization would bring and I tell you now it will really screw us because the squares will go for it, its like playing a slot machine taking an 8 team parlay.

Yes-I agree with you. For it to work long term-there must EVENTUALLY be OPEN competition.

What you describe sounds more like sucker bets than gambling. Sorta like "heads we win tails you lose". The system I would hope for is Private Industry running it and Paying Taxes on profits. Uncle would LOVE that!! But that may indeed be a pipe dream.

Honestly, it's a bad idea to make it readily available to everyone.

In the end, it hurts the people who can least afford it. Desparation feeds upon itself & they run to that slot with their last $20.

Sports gambling is one thing, but this slot junkie shit feeds off of the dumb, the addicted, and the old folks who get bused into the casinos for their day out of the rest home.

Slots create junkies.....

Amen to that, there is no doubt about it that slots, especially video slots and video poker are 95% of the problem causers. Amazingly these legislators always talk about the harm gambling causes, but turn around and say "well we will allow only machines, not that table game stuff. No that would be too Las Vegas for us" Stupidest argument you could ever hear, but its all you hear now because the only way they will allow gaming is if it pays off with lots of money and that is where the money is. Sad statement, but the machines and the lottery are usually the game of the lower classes and the tables and sports are the higher class games because neither caters to the get rich in one play crowd.

If I had a penny for every time I saw a welfare-collecting crackhead plunking down his/her last $5 for a Powerball ticket instead of buying milk or bread for their kids...

I think the government allowing lottery sales in most states is basically because they knew that in the old days numbers runners were everywhere. Basically they knew this would be a cash cow and could not be stopped--(playing the numbers). Personally I never participated in this, but it prayed on the poor and those least able to play, just as the lottery does today. Sports gaming as Wild Bill correctly states is not for those who think-get rich over-night as the lottery pushes. ("What would you do with 5 Million dollars?" Insert figure) How stupid and gullible people are. But when it's the only game they know-it creates a life of it's own. Maybe oneday Sports betting can be brought into the sunlight like day trading in the stock market or something very similiar.
