Why does a foreign company require our (US citizens) SSN?? Because of the Patriot Act? Yeah right.

Dante, you probably signed up before PA was enacted...pretty sure they are requiring ssn's for new signups now...

Thrill, you are correct. But what I'm worried about is Neteller instituting a new policy requiring ALL members to give them their SSN -to FULLY comply with the American Patriot Act

why would they want us to know that the day before he gets back? are there some problems going on that they are blaming on his abscence?? i cant imagine any other reason for needing to spread this news.

Thanks for this post Shrink.

Not that I know David K. --but was reading at Mwager in a post by ClevFan something about that she heard he had "left Neteller". She didn't get a response one way or the other, but I was worried about the company - (if) he was gone and for what reason. You've cleared it up.
A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing!

By the way,

David Kahane just called me while on his vacation...

We spoke for a few minutes and he reassured me that everything is business as usual for Neteller...

David Kahane: Why do you feel compelled to comply with the US Patriot Act? Canada is a sovereign nation, not subject to US laws.Canadians are always complaining about being a satellite of the US,and this is the reason why: They bend over as soon as the US comes calling.Shame on you for kow-towing to the Yanks.

I'm not an expert on the law nor an expert on anything for that matter. But--if all they want is a ss#--I have no problem with that. Now if they want a driver's liscense too--THEN-I have a problem!
But the reason I think they are talking "the talk" of compliance is that you can allways catch more bees with honey than vinegar. Translated means--stay on Uncle's good side-doesn't hurt. As long as they are an honest company --that's the bottom line to me!

What if the Feds demand the ss numbers from Neteller, and Neteller complies? Our ass is grass, if this happens.

The reason Neteller complies with the Patriot Act is very simple-- they are doing business in the U.S. with U.S banks. They have to comply. Foreign companies doing business in the U.S. are not exempt.

If the US demands #'s from Neteller, then I would be worried ONLY if one of two things happened: 1. It was against the law to play and the player was to be punished in any way. or 2. Profits had been made and not reported as income.

If reason no.1

becomes law--I'm through playing offshore anyway!!!

Thanks for the updates Ken.

For the record they are asking for SS#'s now. Sent a partner of mine there that did not play much off-shore and he verified this a couple weeks ago. Not sure what all the implications are if any but if you are claiming your winnings and paying taxes I would think you are okay. They aren't going to bother you IMO if this is being done.

Having said that I must admit I am not keen on giving out my SS# either. Wish there was another way without it....
