Being from that area I'm in , central Florida, I havent actually heard of, or run across any actual bookies, except for a guy down in Miami. Just curious how many of you have, and still do, use one, and if so, why do you use the local at all??....convenience??

i use a local in chicago in case i have a bad week and go bust in my offshore accounts. also, their lines are usually pretty square, especially during football, so its nice when the dogs start barking.

I know a guy in West Palm. Just uses the lines in the Sun Sentinal news paper.

Damn I miss that guy.

Used to use one, but found offshore so much easier.

Bad things: With all the locals I knew, you could only put in bets the same day, usually only a few hours before the game. You got whatever number was in the newspaper. He could cut your limits at any time and could decide he didn't want action on particular games. If he wasn't around or didn't feel like picking up the phone, you couldn't bet. Plus where I'm from, a push on the total was counted as a loss and parlays paid less than Vegas odds.

Good things: sometimes soft lines. Usually you got paid.

I still sometimes use one when I want the paper's morning line while every line offshore has already moved against me.

I have, but he isn't exactly the best.

He only takes very small bets and never really moves his line...

very small time guy that I met when I was duck hunting... oh the joys of living in Louisiana

need to make sure the guy pays before you start. makes sense to get a referral from someone you know. in my case, my guy was referred by a friend who has played with him for five years and bets much bigger than i do. i have no fear of getting stiffed and never have.

Locals are a nice weapon to have in a bettors arsenal. I have several around and a couple of them don't even use the screen or worry about it. Big moves don't bother them, they move solely on action it seems. Hell they don't move at all until me and several friends wearing fake noses and beards hammer them a little bit.

We had a bookie in my old High School, A good friend of mine. He made $1000 or more a week for the 3 months he did it until he was caught!

Luckily I was not one of the people who used him or else I would have gotten suspended.

He got caught because someone bet a football game for 100 dollars and won 350 dollars off of it, and the mom saw how much money he had in his room and thought the kid was selling drugs!! So he confessed about gambling and ratted on my friend the bookie.

HACHE.......when choosing a local look for the following

1. in business at least 10yrs (full time not part time)
2. regular business hours
3. makes it clear up front how much and what type action he takes.
4. doesnt limit types of action on certain games (ie.takes teasers during football season, but doesnt take teasers or parlays during nfl playoffs ect)
5. a local should never ever have to "cut off" or limit players action........why??? because a good local will know what type of player the person is before he makes his bets, meaning he should ask you how much you play, what sports, types of bets..
6. they should be professional.

just some things to look for, alot guys that have been in business for a while are just as solid as the largest offshore books...
